I know I’m kind of missing the point of the post, but I disagree with that being a bad photo. It’s an effing work of art and I can’t believe Google Maps produced it. The framing, the lighting, the soft focus, the fact that it’s impossible to place in time. I love every part of it

Whatever work Geller has done, it is inherently untrustworthy because of this lack of structure. Yes, we should have restorative justice systems. Yes, rehabilitation should be a goal when people wrong each other. But we do not have the former, so we cannot trust the latter.

What I have yet to see is an actual statement of what problem this policy is supposed to address, just comparisons to other countries’ policies. That’s what bothers me more than anything else, because it suggests that the motivation is “foreigners gross” and because it guarantees poor implementation

If I understand it, the DA's claim is that Jane Doe originally filed a police report in order to let them know that no crime had been committed. And like... that's enough information on its own to know the DA is a liar.
Every single newspaper that reported that Jane Doe “changed her story” should be rushing to publish retractions right now.
This case should be a lesson in taking a DA’s victim-blaming statements at face value. Victims do not report to the police because they thought nothing happened to them.

I care about many issues in politics, but immigration is my red line. I want a government that is positive about it, that recognises that it's good, that doesn't reluctantly concede that some of us might not be so bad after all, while holding that immigration is a bad thing we must reduce.

Eliezer Yudkowsky - who, again, is immensely influential among the leaders of big AI companies and the US tech policy ecosystem that his rich fans have all but taken over - seems to think the only way to stop the AI apocalypse is doing straight-up eugenics to make “smarter people.”
