Fun fact: marsupials and monotremes lack a corpus callosum. They split off from eutherians before the corpus callosum evolved.

My theory: More than critiques of circular financing, or of dubious product functionality, "stochastic parrots" undermines the foundation that the entire AI boom is built on: The story that the AI industry is building an unfathomably powerful machine god.

Were you confused, horrified, or enraged by the premise of One Night Only, a film that sets a playful romcom in a dystopian hellscape?

So was @tobiascarroll.bsky.social! And lucky for us, he's written about why the worldbuilding is, shall we say, SUBPAR.

Happy 48th anniversary of the day they pulled the plug on Chesterfield Canal and drained all the water out
Today is the 47th anniversary of this clearly unimprovable photo, from a story so absurd that it shouldn’t be true, but is: the day a team of workers from British Waterways pulled the plug out of the Chesterfield Canal, and all the water emptied out

This is a triggering image of a museum display in the natural history museum in DC about life before smartphones. Me and a fellow 40+ person were laughing at how we are now LITERAL MUSEUM PIECES. MY teen was like did you have a clear phone? An address book? A book of maps. Yes, yes I did. 🫠🫠🫠

The closest I got to see a Starfield meme was when a rando posted a short about the devs adding them as a canonical companion in the game. The short then linked to a long video, where they failed to recruit themselves due to already having a companion, without a means to dismiss the current one
Starfield is almost three years old now and in that time I have yet to see a single piece of fanart or meme or anything about the contents of the game itself. The extent to which they spent years on that game only for it to be met with a resounding cultural disinterest is fascinating

The worst is when you reach too far into your junk drawer and accidentally brush up against someone else’s hand in their junk drawer.
There is something kind of unsettling in the fact that according to replies here everyone has the exact same junk drawer.

Like pulling out the drawer just opens a portal to The Universal Junk Drawer and we all just draw directly from that.
for a junk drawer to legally qualify as a real junk drawer, what is the ONE absolute mandatory item it must include?

The Forest of Galtres was established by Norman Kings and spread North from York's walls. It covered 100,000 acres and encompassed 60 villages.

As early as 15th century concerns were expressed about deforestation and by 1629 it had all but disappeared.

The Hall is its legacy.

People know that I care about performance, especially since we've almost collectively forgotten how fast our machines actually are (except for a few people that *do* care - you know who you are).

This now sits at 720ms in a master build.

Thread with optimizations:
Loading all 1.6GB of current assets (textures & meshes) in 570ms on my 10-year old machine (with a 2080 Ti) using IOCP and unbuffered async reads.

Happy for now with this!
Final optimization for deployment: loading from a single compressed archive instead of N files.
