Margaret Chowning’s Catholic Women and Mexican Politics, 1750–1940 places Catholic women at the forefront of Mexican conservatism and shows how they kept loyalty to the church strong when the church was weak.

Again, it is almost impossible to overstate the stupidity & bad faith involved in using "salary four years after graduation" as a metric of the worth of majors or degrees, let alone - as US News & World Report did in epic bad faith this year - as a criteria for ranking universities & colleges.

America was an empty mall. America was shoddy caulk oozing from a vinyl arc in a historic heatwave. America was a brutishly redacted Frederick Douglass speech on foam posterboard in a tractor trailer Freedom Truck. America was not even selling corndogs.

Find an adviser that you like working with. This is more important than topic and more important than fame.

It's not that those other things don't matter, but you will do your best work when you get along with your advisor
Philosofriends, if you have a piece of advice for beginning philosophy graduate students, please share it in the comments at Daily Nous. Thanks!

Support bookstores, buy my book! And, since it's also Banned Books Week, I'll just add that I know of, uh, a few places where my book's subject and incredible cover art are keeping it off the shelves.

It's esp important for male academics to learn more about how problematic the Title IX process is and how poorly universities treat survivors.

I helped organize a conference panel on this topic in 2022. The room was full--of women. Two men came.

This isn't a women's issue, it's a human issue.
For every story like the Cornell gang rape, there are thousands more that couldn’t make it into the light.

I wrote about a few dozen of them at one university in On the Wrong Side. The university’s treatment of survivors is eerily similar to what Jane Doe at Cornell experienced.

This review highlights @rachelshelden.bsky.social's new book on the political SCOTUS.
The Supreme Court rules over us, with 5 unelected judges wiping out legislation passed by the people's representatives. Is this how democracy is supposed to work?

Two new books argue the court seized power it was never intended to have. And how to take it back.
