We’ve lived through the nearly complete systematic unwinding of the postwar public university, which for all its faults, was premised on the idea that not only aristocrats could be intellectuals, & that having non-aristocratic intellectuals was better for knowledge & therefore better for everyone
We are getting dangerously close to a point when the only people who are able to stay in academia are those who have enough independent wealth to keep going indefinitely as independent scholars.
We really need a comprehensive (government funding bodies, charitable funders, universities, learned societies and ECRs) summit and plan for maintaining postdoctoral pipelines AND not letting the crises simply re-inscribe extant inequalities in the system.

2. Planning reform. Build those pylons. Dig those reservoirs. The energy generation and storage needs are acute, as is housing.

The Times supports the Russell Group idea of letting the ‘best’ universities charge more, a proposal for running institutions into the ground if they haven’t benefitted from accumulated prestige. And ‘best’ according to what? Teaching quality would produce a different list than assumed here.
