Today is my last day at HuffPost. Like many others, I was hit by mass layoffs at BuzzFeed.

“The worst place ever I’ve been in my life," Sakariye Abdi Mohamed, a Somali asylum seeker, told me over the phone from Guantanamo Bay last week.

Sakariye is one of 7 or 8 Somalis who are being held at Gitmo. They say guards tell them the order to keep Somalis at the facility comes from DC.

Today is my last day at HuffPost. After 11 years, I was laid off as part of the 33% cuts at BuzzFeed. My team, the National desk, was cut from 7 reporters to 3, after being cut from 14 to 7 just over a year ago

Private prison company CoreCivic has sold four of its ICE jails to the U.S. government in recent weeks for a total of $2.2 billion – an average of $307,000 per bed.

The government was already paying CoreCivic to operate the facilities, and that will continue.

A man named Edwin Jeovanny Lopez Cornejo died Saturday at Delaney Hall ICE jail in Newark, reports indicate – the second death at the facility since December.
