My For You page on every streaming service: "Look at all these period dramas. Bet you wanna watch every single one of them, you fucking loser. Never met a big ole hat you didn't like, did you?"

They got me there.

someone smarter than me could probably write an essay about the popularity of RRR and the way a lot of people reacted to 10/7 but that seems beyond my capabilities

Oct 7th as a Jew outside Israel, was a uniquely bizarre and traumatizing thing because you were just glued to watching it happen, and so were all the Jews in your life, and all your Goyish friends had no idea

or worse were unmasked invasion of the body snatchers style as Jew haters
I remember going to sleep just after mid-night October 7th 2023, and the first reports were just starting to trickle in, not anything to indicate what was really happening, scattered reports of individual paragliders

its really hard to sum up the before and after of it

For The New York Times, I wrote about how Rod Serling create The Twilight Zone in part because it was the only way in the 1950 and 60s for him to comment on the subjects he cared about most, and how that's a good blueprint for contemporary media to deal with our surreal current moment:
Opinion | ‘The Twilight Zone’ Created a Blueprint for Surviving Our Surreal Moment (Gift Article)
With “The Twilight Zone,” Rod Serling created a durable blueprint for understanding our surreal reality.

Horrifying: Arizona Democratic congressional candidate Bernadette Greene-Placentia was raped by a man after he knocked her out. Another man approached her to do the same. “She began swinging her foot at him. ‘Not even worth it,’ she heard the man say as he moved away.”

Embarrassed, she initially didn’t want to report attack. Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office's investigation is ongoing.

something I'm thinking about today is the utter inability of most of kidlit to give one single solitary shit about Israeli children killed or taken hostage and how it's made me wonder if I'll ever feel like a part of that community again

A lot of things in the last three years have shocked me, but perhaps none quite as much as the complete inability of large swathes of the left to criticize Israel without lapsing into virulent antisemitism. Such a profound failure on both the moral and pragmatic level.
If you want to know why Jews are suspicious of you when you're just trying to be a well-meaning antizionist gentile, consider that these two things were written by the same man, Guangtian Ha, a (currently suspended) religion professor at Haverford

Something ppl need to realize is that almost everyone in Israel--and a good chunk of Jews outside of Israel--knew someone who was seriously hurt or killed by Hamas during the Oct 7 Massacre.

It's like if 9/11 killed multiple orders of magnitude more people per capita.
Then, as the day went on, we realised it was real

Then a friend asked me if I knew any journalists who could help find her friends brother who had gone missing in the attacks

Then came the immediate surge of antisemitism here

Later, I found out my old housemates cousin was killed in the attacks

There are so many people, so many, that love film and want to dedicate their whole lives to making films, in front of the camera, behind it, in editing suites and casting rooms and makeup trailers. And that these locusts can come in and just devour the industry, take it from us all, is devastating.

These three years must be a reminder: we cannot retreat into simple binaries.

We can mourn the horrific terror of October 7 and the devastating loss of Palestinian life. We can believe both Israelis and Palestinians deserve dignity, safety, freedom, and self-determination.
