You wanna lawyer for this administration, you gotta be willing to lie. This one is too honest. If I were in the gallery, I’d lead a chant of, “You’ll be fired in the morning.” Maybe I’ve lived in England too long.
BREAKING: In response to a question from Judge Trina Thompson, DOJ attorney just said it is "fair" to say that their list has a "high" error rate.

Trump at the reflecting pool: “We had a war with Iran. We won.”

Seconds later:

“It’s not a war. We’ve done very little fighting.”

NB: If your understanding of a constitutional power or office implies that some official acting under color of law is beyond accountability, your understanding *must be* defective at some point. No constitutional system can have powers or offices like that; it's a contradiction in terms.

This is not counsel of despair; it's that we mustn't treat obviously corrupt and, indeed, *constitution-negating* pardons as even presumptively legitimate. They're presumptively *illegitmate*, and should be treated that way even before they're offered. Prominent electeds doing so might deter them!

This is where the magic of inherent contempt comes into its own. And sure, Trump will obstruct you from enforcing exponentially growing fines, and SCOTUS probably will too, but we're gonna have a new President and a new SCOTUS sooner rather than later and that is enough to give the threat teeth.
They would just claim executive privilege with absolute refusal
President Trump told an interviewer he would pardon his aides if Democrats win control of Congress and begin investigating him.

Which .... wouldn't stop Congress from investigating him but would make it harder for witnesses to take the fifth?

the actual literal legal entity known as the Michigan Democratic Party excommunicated Haley Stevens within hours of her endorsing Rogers

where is this Establishment Democrat Elite you speak of?
NYT spends final week of the campaign on bad-faith attacks against Democrats

Establishment Democrat Elite fail to support center-left Democrats who are Muslim, some embrace MAGA far-right-extremist Republicans to block Muslim Democrats

The start of the Iran War and the collapse of the MOU aren't even really that visible on that chart.

Instead, you've got an approve+12 to disapprove+8 (*twenty* point swing) in the first three months, which I imagine is the folks who reacted extremely negatively to specific policies.

One of the claims I keep seeing is "nobody minded Trump until gas prices went up" and certainly that marginal voter exists, but on the whole that is not quite right - after an initial crash, his numbers have ticked down at a steady, regular rate.

People started losing patience before gas prices.

One of the big questions in this political moment, I think, is going to be the degree to which people not only update their priors on politicians (OrangeMan!Bad) but also on information sources (JoeRogan!Idiot; FoxNews!Liars); the latter is, I imagine, going to be a much tougher lift.

Are low-info voters going to deep dive into tariff policies or the downstream economic impacts of immigration? No. Should they? Maybe! But they won't.

They reply on intermediaries to tell them.

Their intermediaries said, "Trump is a businessman" and "it'll be fine" so they thought it'd be fine.

Being reasonably plugged in to the NeverTrump part of the coalition, you could watch the process by which conservative voices were one-by-one exiled, forced into retirement, or forced to reinvent themselves as Baghdad Bobs for MAGA, because those were the alternatives.

So no one told them.

'Why didn't voters know <that these policies> were bad?'

Because if your news was Fox News, no one told you. If your news was the WSJ, the op-ed pages assured you the worst version of this wasn't going to happen.

Because MAGA spent 8 years crushing anyone who would say otherwise.

One thing that I think is underappreciated in how Trump was able to capture and tame right-wing media is that MAGA steadily removed the circuits - already very weak in the Fox-News-Universe - which were supposed to warn voters about these problems before they became policy.

YLS isn't really a law school in the normal sense of the word. It's kind of a less rigorous government department that also teaches contracts.

The question this raises is: why does he have a job?
'Whatever 5 Justices say' is a valid description of how gov't operates in practice, but Moyn treats it like an indisputable normative principle. If that's really all "law" is then it's meaningless, it's merely a veil for the exercise power. Is legal nihilism really what he believes? What he teaches?

People can do damaging things while undergoing mental health epidodes. You can hold them accountable for the harms they're doing while also wondering if something else is going on here, contributing to that behavior. I don't think Stevens belongs in politics anymore, even if it is a manic episode.

I asked if Haley Stevens was having a manic episode or something because she's behaving in a way that does not seem rational - like there is seemingly no guaranteed fox news spot waiting for her or whatever. It was done as a last minute heel turn and burned all of her bridges.
