How are science writers coping with the unprecedented assault on science and what is the path ahead? Was honored to discuss this at #SciWri25 plenary with @shiplives.bsky.social @jeanna.bsky.social and Erin Podolak. Missed @michellejewell.bsky.social who still contributed much from afar.

What's the word for something both terrifying and mesmerizing?
This meso loop of #Melissa from CIRA is absolutely stunning at it makes its closes in on landfall in southwestern Jamaica.

“I’m a senior citizen. I’m tired.”

Truly a devastating story about people unable to recover from disasters, even using all their retirement savings. I fear this for so many of us.
As climate change increasingly becomes a threat not just to homes, but to the very foundations of retirement, even the most careful savers are finding personal effort can’t outpace the risks woven deeply into the financial system.

Climate Change Puts A Generation’s Retirement On The Line
Early retirement withdrawals for hardship have tripled since 2020, as disasters strike and insurance fails–leaving workers on their own in old age.

This quiet shutdown of one-third of the USA's climate adaptation capacity will happen this week.
Despite broad political support, one third of the nation's Climate Adaptation Science Centers will wind down in coming days due to lack of funds.

The Northeast, South Central, and Pacific Islands will be left without actionable science on drought, floods, wildfire, sea level rise and other hazards.
Trump officials shut off funding for climate adaptation centers
A third of the U.S. Geological Survey’s Climate Adaptation Science Centers are expected to drastically wind down and possibly close after Sept. 30.

Three regional CASCs - the Northeast, South Central and Pacific Islands - will cease operations in coming weeks because Dept of the Interior won’t approve their next 5-year agreements.

Other CASCs have had projects cancelled and funds reprogrammed in violation of Congressional appropriations.
A climate science network may lose its Pacific hub. Here's what that means for local researchers
A local hub for climate research is facing an uncertain future. As HPR's Savannah Harriman-Pote reports, time is ticking for them to receive crucial federal funding.

The national network of Climate Adaptation Science Centers met this week in Juneau, AK. Our visit coincided with a glacial outburst flood, atmospheric river and landslide - hazards becoming more frequent and severe as climate warms.

CASC science addresses these risks & more, but is under threat.

15 hours means a storm like this could be identified in the middle of the night and, if it was making landfall, you’d wake up needing to figure out evacuation later that day.
Hurricane Erin went from Category 1 to Category 4 in 15 hours Y'all. That's well beyond our definition of rapid intensification. My update on the hurricane. It may not be done strengthening yet. Where is it going and how strong will it get?

This is extremely alarming news and very bad for the future of science (not just climate) in America.
This would mark an extraordinary, unprecedented, and alarming level of interference in what has historically been a fair and systematic process. The previous NCAs were authored by hundreds of scientists who were leading domain experts in their fields. www.cnn.com/2025/08/...

You DO NOT need a social media following to be a "good" conservationist. You DO NOT need a super aesthetic social media account to be an effective conservationist.

Most of the superstar conservationists I know don't even have accounts.

Just FYI for no particular reason...
