My first ever Ghost Orchids! From NE Estonia. Finding them was hard enough, photographing was even harder due to constant attacks from mosquitoes and horseflies ...

The snail (genus Helix) actually forms a spiral shape in cross-section, whereas the orchid Spiranthes spiralis in fact forms a helix with its flowers. Have these words always had precise meanings (respectively 2-D, and 3-D) or did these arise later?

I can name 8 orchid taxa that appeared new to UK since 1976, and which *might* have arrived naturally.

But the only non-orchid I can think of that this applies to is Pancratium maritimum. Can anyone think of more?

Our friend @milneorchid.bsky.social needs your help!
He's working on an orchid book for the Collins New Naturalist series, and needs more orchid images.
Find out how you could help Richard & maybe get one of your orchid photos (with credit) into this prestigious new book:

Voting for Reform does not make you a racist.
But it does make you a person who is OK with racism.
It makes you a person who thinks that racists should be in charge.
It makes you the sort of person who witnesses a racist attack and at best does nothing, at worst nods along approvingly.

After confusing Sphagnum moss with Polytrichum, last night saw another #BotanyFail from #UniversityChallenge. The Q asked what name applied to leaves arranged in parallel rows along a common stem. The claimed answer, "Pinnate" was very wrong, because that means a single leaf with LEAFLETS in rows.

Name That Plant is an amazing #WildFlowerID resource created by @milneorchid.bsky.social!
The website namethatplant.org is built on a photo library of >2,700 plant taxa.
We were delighted when Richard very kindly agreed to let us use those fabulous images on the new BSBI website: bsbi.org/plants!

@bsbibotany.bsky.social Anyone know any reliable sites for Poa bulbosa **with flowers**? Preferable daytrippable from London or Edinburgh? Found several sites on BSBI database but seem to be non-flowering. Its for namethatplant.org.

It is not enough to just say "The Tories broke Britain.
We need to say WHY.
The answer - just two words - INEQUALITY, and XENOPHOBIA.
Each promotes the other, and together they led to Brexit.
#Reform promotes both, on steroids. No wonder #Jenrick joined them.
