There's no way of removing plastics from the soil once they have degraded. That's why one of our key messages is to minimise contamination going forward.

International action around plastics in agricultural soils is vital if we are to avoid detrimental effects on our food chain and ecosystems. The FAO has produced a new report with recommendations on waste, labelling, recycling, risk assessment of biodegradables, & more.

A review of the international and regional policy landscape for the management of plastics used in agriculture
Plastics are deeply embedded in modern agriculture, yet global governance frameworks have not kept pace with their growing environmental and health risks. This report provides a comprehensive review…

We founf microplastics in nearly all the 220 agricultural soils we studied across 11 European countries. Let that sink in.

Organic farmers need alternatives.

We need to make sure that the plastics we use in agriculture are safe. But how do we do that?

Violette Geissen talks about the need for better regulation and information around all forms of plastic used in farming.

Our research on microplastics, farm chemicals and nitrigen cycling has been featured in #FEMSmicroBlog 🎉

Stathis Lagos has written a 'micro blog' on the interactions between microplastics and farm chemicals, and how that can interfere with nitrogen cycling processes.

What happens to common food crops when microplastics are in the soil.

We tested conventional microplastics (LDPE), biodegradable microplastics (PBAT), and two common farm chemicals in soils growing the salad crop, rocket.

Possibly the most worrying aspect of microplastics is their impact on animals, from large sea creatures to tiny soil-dwelling organisms.

Our webinar looks at the effects of three different plastic types and commonly-used farm chemicals on earthworms, springtails (Collembola) and honeybees.

New research supported by MINAGRIS and others found that UV and tillage abrasion accelerated the fragmentation of plastic film into macro- and microplastics, and that increased soil moisture made some plastic films degrade quicker.
