Your games hook is "why would someone want to play this?", not (by default) its USP

It's the thing that in a 6-second trailer makes people go "oooh I want to know more". If you can't articulate that, then you're going to struggle to find what makes the game interesting to the average person
and you get this when you talk to publishers still. "What's your USP? What's your unique mechanic?" man, I'm telling you, as a person who's worked at a very high level consulting on projects and being very good at knowing what sells: players do not care about features like that

You CANNOT tell me that there's 20+ years between these two people. They both look to be in their twenties, maybe early thirties.

Best I can come up with after hearing Anca lament the age difference is him being 18 and her 38, which still feels like a stretch?

i've had other programmers tell /me/ "yeah i trust you so i won't bother trying to understand this, ship it" so i am, shall we say, pretty skeptical that turning the entire profession into oops all code review is going to lead to quality outcomes

it is actually so easy to not use AI

i'm literally just sitting here. not using AI.

when I write I put my fingers on the keyboard and make words happen directly. without AI.

Yeah i agree, it's so strange to make a fuss about it

As if a small fraction of players making and installing the most predictable mod for a game is emblematic of how the timer was received

Every game has some form of Godmode mod on Nexus! It's doesn't mean anything

Tired: enjoying "content"

Wired: enjoying nerds yap, artists making things, reading fanfics/comics/magazines, watching gamers fail at things other than being human

Specificity is the spice of life.

Did find one of those placeholders as well by now 😬
Definitely, thank you for linking the article!

I do have to say though, it reads very reasonable compared to other cases. Generating previews during an iterative process, with the set intent to give the final script to voice actors, is kind of the best one can hope for, if AI must be used at all.

Note to all the AI-using game devs who get caught and go "Oh, that was just a placeholder!"

No, THIS is what placeholder assets look like!

At least my "Großes Latinum" is getting some use again #TheBloodOfDawnwalker

I wasn't exactly thinking of video games as a use case when taking advanced classes and my finals in Latin, but hey it's a fun party trick xD

I'm sorry, but I have to ask: Why does a Polish studio decide to release their game at midnight our time?

Fun theatrics aside, it being vampire-themed and having day/night mechanic, that must be a logistical nightmare for certain jobs.

A lot of time-sensitive work starts at launch...

Oh also, hello to the new people who found me through starter packs 👋🏼

Is there a resurgence of them going on and I somehow missed it? Is @bsky.app finally pushing one of its best features?

Why do restaurants seem to think that these AI renditions of food look even passably appetizing?

Bring back the bad phone pictures, or at least stock images please 🤢

Is it really an automation game if it does not have customization options?

Our Zero-G Sandbox Exovia at least is soon getting some 🎨

Currently on the road to Amsterdam, but I want to quickly shout out this cool thing we organized at work:

(P.S.: We also released a new game today. Oh and you can claim another one for free. And then there's NEO BERLIN 2087... It's been a busy last few weeks.)

That game dev teams are homogenously in agreement on the game's design. Every team I've been on has had a ton of debate and conflict on every single aspect of a game's design. "Did the devs just not notice X!?" yeah, half of us got in a real nasty knife fight with the other half. I lost an ear lobe.

game devs: what are the myths that a lot of players of games think are true about making games that are completely untrue? If you could snap your fingers and they suddenly all knew the truth about it what would it be?

What does one do on a weekday night in Berlin when they can't sleep?

Correct, go out to a bookstore that's open until midnight. At least if their name is Nat.

The haul itself also feels like quintessential me:
