This week’s half hour “What On Earth” show is about why climate seems to have dropped off the list of Canadians’ priority concerns. Lots of possible explanations, except for the elephant in the room: media’s failure to cover the fossil fuel-burning-caused climate crisis adequately or often enough.
Our public broadcaster CBC Radio continues to disappoint when it comes to covering the climate crisis. It has only 1 little weekly show, “What On Earth” devoted to climate issues (we get 3 or 4 business reports a day), and now that 1 show seems to have been reduced from one hour to a half hour.

We need to increase scientific literacy and understanding, not reduce it with bad LLM summaries. In my line of work the biggest challenge is finding and accessing literature to begin with and putting it to use alongside policy for impact assessments and developing effective mitigation measures.
This is the future of scientific papers.
Instead of a PDF, the paper is an AI agent that you can talk to, ask questions, run analyses.
No more digging through supplements - just ask the paper directly: "what p-value cutoff was used in Fig 3B? Re-run at 0.01."

speaking as a science journalist who is also a trained physicist, this is the FUCKING WORST POSSIBLE THING. This is the opposite of trustworthy. You can't trust a damn thing an "AI agent" tells you. An article needs to be unchanged between queries, or any change needs to be documented clearly.

After working hard to get rid of our non-native and invasive ground cover, I added 10 more species to the front & back yards this weekend. I'm most excited about the sweetgrass and little bluestem. I hope they spread & propagate so I can put them in some other places too.
