Under P deficiency, extraplastidic phospholipids are hydrolyzed to liberate free P, with up-regulation of plastidial pathways for the synthesis of non-P lipids, including monogalactosyldiacylglycerol (MGDG), digalactosyldiacylglycerol (DGDG), and sulfoquinovosyldiacylglycerol (SQDG). These galactolipids are subsequently trafficked from plastids to extraplastidic membranes to substitute for degraded phospholipids.
