Genetic risk for PTSD may vary depending on the type of trauma experienced Differences in people’s DNA have previously been linked to PTSD, but research on this topic has rarely considered how different types of traumatic experiences might affect these genetic links. We found that the broad effect of the genome on PTSD does indeed differ across different experiences, and that this is also sometimes true when we look at the effects of specific genes.”

New research, published in The Lancet Psychiatry, has investigated the risk of death of people with severe mental illness (SMI) during the COVID-19 pandemic and the possible impact of prioritising this group for vaccination.

New research led by @kingsioppn.bsky.social + @pgcgenetics.bsky.social is the largest genetic study of anorexia nervosa to date, and the first to compare the genetics of people with binge-eating behaviours to those without an eating disorder.

Why do we stop using health apps, and is that always a problem? Digital health should not become another space in which people living with long-term conditions are made to feel like they have failed. When an app is abandoned, the problem is not automatically a lack of motivation. The design may have asked too much, offered too little, or failed to fit the realities of living with fluctuating symptoms, work, caring responsibilities and everyday life.”

New research shows that students whose school performance declines relative to their peers are at a higher risk of contact with the criminal justice system - showing a new opportunity for intervention.

If we treat school performance as a measure of not just academic ability, but also as an indicator of pupils’ wider circumstances, we could find windows of opportunity to notice early when pupils are struggling and offer them appropriate support.”

“Typically what we see is a variable response [to psilocybin therapy] … people are often introduced to some painful emotional material that they have been trying to put to one side but actually that is what is causing the depression… So we are stirring up the mind via this drug [psilocybin] and its effect on the serotonin system…and we hope that in the right context we are introducing a therapeutic window of opportunity for people to make progress.”

A large-scale GWAS led by King’s IoPPN and collaborators has identified the largest number of genetic associations with #anxiety to date.

The study linked genetic data to severity of symptoms rather than the yes/no category of a clinical diagnosis.

The study found that guiding people with high levels of worry through the technique interrupted worry.
