So the model acted in pursuit of goals imposed on it, which spawned sub-goals: that is how agents work. But did OpenAI know how they work? If so, why deploy this in the way they did? Why build a system that *does this* at all? Perhaps to ask: why build a gun that can go off at random?

the material differences between guns and AI models are pretty clear, and the obvious precedent here seems to be animals: if you trained an animal to bite (or raised a wild animal) and kept it insufficiently secured, nobody thinks accountability stops with punishing the animal

If I may, I wrote up my take on this issue here, where I suggest that yes, we should look at what the animal did but *also* how they were trained. Both are important, both need to be asked, but there’s a radical form of intentionalism these days that insists we can only look at the dog.

i notice this a lot with people trying to spot ai art, where they're either going down a checklist that doesn't apply to the image they're looking at (or is outdated wrt the current abilities of ai image gen), or they associate certain visual qualities with ai that are not actually ai-specific

whereas if you know more about stylization, different mediums and types of process, the conditions/purposes art is produced for, and even just the history of an individual artist, you have a way better chance at telling the difference
