🧪 It's time once again for the annual #MoffittIMO workshop, and @sandyanderson.bsky.social points out some of the many things to love about it: Highlighting all scientists create models, participants bring diverse ideas/experiences and that science can and should be truly interdisciplinary.

This is brilliant, yet so simple.
We collected 2 metric tonnes of pots, pans, mugs, bowls ect..from students leaving UCL and gave them free to new students. Big CO2 saving with reduced waste and happy students. www.ucl.ac.uk/about/news/2...

It was only as a result of listening to Patrick Stewart's autobiography that I learned what an important place theatre held in working class towns like the one where he grew up.
If you want more Patrick Stewarts, then you publicly fund the arts and learning programs, so that working class kids can find their way into making a career in them.

thinking about Patrick Stewart and Tim Curry and Dolly Parton and Catherine O’Hara and how many of the tributes shared after they died translate to something like “their art made me feel like I wasn’t alone in the world”

it is hard to think of a better way to spend a life than that

patrick stewart more than maybe anyone else showed that you can take science fiction seriously on screen, that it can be profound and meaningful and that just because you're on a spaceship doesn't mean it's a joke

I am tremendously grateful to him for that
Patrick Stewart, a trained Shakespearian, could have treated Star Trek as something hokey, which it kind of is, but instead brought those skills to make it something bigger than it was on paper and set. I’ll keep this monologue with me, and so many other moments, forever. Thank you, Sir Patrick.

On March 18, 2025, Secretary of State Marco Rubio handed the reins of the US Agency for International Development to Jeremy Lewin, a 28-year-old graduate of Harvard Law School and DOGE affiliate. But USAID HR said he was not onboarded.
A 28-Year-Old DOGE Operative Gutted USAID. HR Had No Record of Him Working There
Despite the agency's human resources department saying he hadn’t even been onboarded, Jeremy Lewin oversaw the destruction of USAID. It’s not clear he had the legal authority to do so.

This kid is an absolute joy to watch. I hope he has an epic career ahead of him!

Community led public health measures FTW!
“At one Lancaster County home, 110 people formed “a line out the kitchen door,” Wallace said.

“We were like, ‘Whoa.’ We had to run back to the health center twice to get more vaccine,” Wallace said. “It starts out as a very private family thing, and it ends up being a neighborhood community thing.”

To get the word out about free measles vaccination clinics, Pennsylvania health department officials “sought input from Amish elders and religious leaders, who recommended their own back channels. This “Amish Internet,” as some call it, is a word-of-mouth connectivity as invisible as radio waves.”
Pa. measles vaccine messaging depends on word-of-mouth to reach the Amish community
State health officials wanted to educate the Amish community about the measles vaccine and deliver shots to their doorstep. To do it, they ditched traditional public health models.

I've been asked to put together a thread on the dangers of ibuprofen and other NSAIDs in ultra running by @matt-amato.bsky.social

It's rather mammoth, but a topic that's hard to condense whilst maintaining enough accuracy.

Please share if you find it useful!

It's quite alarming that we're already having to filter AI-generated content out of our libraries, and I suspect this is very much the future. Though "AI authors" is a strange term. An AI can't be an author. It's a way of stealing other people's work.
All you Libby users borrowing digital books and audiobooks through your library cards, you can set your preferences to human authors and artists ONLY. Click the middle button at the bottom, then "Content Controls" under Settings. You'll find "AI Contributions" there. Click in to it to make changes.
