there are moral arguments against the death penalty in its ideal form but in real life you never need to get there. the prior question is "can the state be trusted to end the life only of the rightly convicted without torture?" and the answer is no
two doses of lethal drugs and still alive. heartbreaking and barbaric

i think you can fairly say that the second trump administration is the most racist federal administration since woodrow wilson and honestly i'm not sure that it isn't more racist than wilson's
Tough competition of course, but the Trump admin deciding that white South Africans are the only group of people on earth currently worthy of refugee status has to be the most overtly racist thing any administration has done in decades
Hi folks. If you saw this, you know the administration plans to only accept white South Africans next year. Tomorrow is Congress's formal say before the determination is signed. Please check this brief thread on why I'd like you to speak out for the Afghan people still in limbo...

i think it is bad that the president is that helm of a deranged cult of personality
Trump: "Please right your right hand. I pledge to the greatest president in the history of the United States. That loves us so much he can't even breath. That I will go out with my family, my friends, I'll do it any way - I don't care if I'm registered or not, I'm going to try to cheat like hell..."

In Massachusetts, we have a responsibility to protect the vulnerable and stand up for those who need it. We don’t throw trans kids under the bus for political points. We protect them—and all of our neighbors—because trans rights are human rights.

It’s mind-blowing that we have literal white nationalists in the White House carrying out unfathomably cruel, abusive, white nationalist policies, and the punditariat has spent the last two weeks debating if some people were too intemperate after a Black man was murdered by cops six years ago.

These people had protected status. They lived here legally. They worked, they paid taxes. They made lives. Raised families.

Now we’ve dehumanized them. Ripped away that protection and told them to get out.

This is a stain on the soul of this Nation.

“Silly” is a good way to put it! There were excesses in 2020 but they were mostly low-stakes efforts by well-intentioned people to address real injustices.

The excesses of the right during the same era were far more harmful. The reckoning we need now is about how elites lost sight of that.
Being more serious re the Atlantic piece, I do actually wonder what people who went in for the sillier aspects of Woke 1 now think of it all?

Aside from its many other problems, the idea Fauci was America's power-abusing covid dictator is somewhat complicated by the fact that he never had the power to do the things they're mad about. His recommendations bound nobody and were not particularly rigorously followed by the actual policymakers.

And again, it doesn’t even matter if these were true. He, a random unelected and unappointed guy, doesn’t get to end run the law, Constitution, & Congress to decide how to set policy. He did, & therefore needs to go to jail for the rest of his life.
Musk still relying on conspiracy theories and lies when it comes to USAID.
"USAID was the biggest funder of regime change. Also, its funding was not stopped it was moved to the State Department."

ICE is not about immigration. ICE is not about the southern border. ICE is about normalizing paramilitary force on our streets.

It cannot be reformed. It cannot be retrained. ICE must be abolished.

there is a cohort of men who resent the responsibilities and obligations of adulthood — of the fact that you owe things to other people. it is a fundamentally childish impulse that they have reconfigured as the height of masculinity, and i think it informs the parasocial attraction to platner.

Justice Thomas, also in dissent, similarly claims that it "devalues" citizenship to recognize the children of "birth tourists and illegal aliens" as citizens.

Again, as if the quality of American citizenship depends on who else is a citizen.

In bad news, with disability education oversight being moved to the Department of Health and Human Services from the Department of Education, that means Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will have power over disability policy positions. New from me at @motherjones.com www.motherjones.com/politics/202...
RFK Jr. will oversee disability education policy

may we remember speaker hortman every time a kid in Minnesota eats their free lunch.

every time a trans person moves to mn for safety.

when an undocumented person gets their driver’s license or a returning citizen gets to vote.

when we have clean energy and electric school buses and warm homes.
One year ago today, Minnesota Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark were senselessly murdered in an act of political violence.

In their memory, we recommit ourselves to the values that Melissa and Mark exemplified: building a kinder, more just, and loving world.

trump's "skill" in making deals has always been based on one thing: his ability to refuse to honor the deal he just made

he'll agree to do something and then just not do it and dare you to impose consequences on him for it

if you can actually do that, well
Donald Trump’s attempts to end the Iran war show that he’s always exaggerated the skill he built his brand upon, David A. Graham argues.
Why Trump Keeps Getting Rolled in Negotiations
The president will try to spin any Iran deal he makes, but he’s ill-equipped to gain real concessions.
