At EU level, the Irish Government proposing any tech policy immediately renders that policy suspect, if not automatically unacceptable.

We are seen as nought a paid for and every time our Govt does something in this area it reaffirms that perception.
This is insanity.
Irish Presidency's draft text of amendments to the GDPR allows training & operation of any AI without safeguards & tough legal basis (under "legitimate interest" a company claims what it is doing is OK. Up to you to find out and challenge in court). This is a free pass for US Tech.

this is also what fucks me off about people saying 'it's pointless, it won't do anything' about boycotts. they need to build and part of that is being in a tiny, seemingly ineffectual minority

The enormous affinity I feel towards the Scots writer Alasdair Gray only grew stronger when I learned he not only said “Work as if you live in the early days of a better nation" but also "Man is the pie that bakes & eats himself".

Not only did I meet Robert Kraft, I worked for him.

His kid Jonathan asked me to “remove the black music” from my gameday playlist in ‘94 & I refused so they fired me. I was the cheerleader director at the time.

I sued them for wrongful termination and won.

So yes, I know that motherfucker.
Did you ever meet Bob Kraft?

This was a pogrom attack. The South East Antrim UDA, a proscribed terror group were linked to it - yet this man is prosecuted for burglary and damage? This is why pogroms keep happening - because the state downplays loyalist terror.
A 34 year old was just handed a sentence of 4 years (2 custodial, 2 on licence) for breaking into a house during the Ballymena pogroms in 2025. Causing damage to the house, the family hid in the attic in fear for over 5 hours. He was charged with burglary with the intent to cause criminal damage

For the evening crowd.
For #BeyondFriday this week we are turning to the great Bob Clark and to his brilliant 1974 film Dead of Night aka Deathdream. A sad, desolate, intense and terrifying political and social horror. What state are people in that come home from the war. A chilling score, the camera movements. Essential.

Since it's Raoul Coutard's birthday, here's a clip from Rocky Road To Dublin, Peter Lennon's 1968 documentary. Coutard had just shot Weekend for Godard & was about to shoot something for Truffaut, took time out to make this no-budget film about how fucked Ireland was then.

If I ever had a minute of facetime with Trump, I would like to tell him that he will be remembered in fifty years mostly as a scary story to tell kids - "Be good or Trump will get you." And I believe that is what will happen.

🆘 I’m watching Mahmoud die in front of me, and I don’t know how to save him.

An infection is spreading through his body. He is in unbearable pain, and every moment his condition gets worse.

Please… don’t let the next thing I write be that Mahmoud is gone.💔😭

Raiders of the Lost Ark, theatrical release, Adelphi Cinema, Dublin, 1981: when the guy with the sword did all the twirling & the posing with it and Indy just shook his head and shot him, and EVERYONE IN THE CINEMA STOOD UP AND CHEERED FOR AT LEAST THREE MINUTES
Raising the always fun question: What are your most memorable theater-going experiences?

Mine also include The Matrix, Blair Witch, and being way too stoned in Belgium when Fellowship of the Ring was sold out so we sat in the back row for Mulholland Drive instead.
It was hands-down one of the most memorable theater-going experiences I can remember, a collective 30-minute butt-clench/armrest-grab for the final climb. And we knew he lived! Wild.
