If Canada is going to become an Associate Member of the EU, a great spot to start would be recognizing EU vehicle safety and emissions standards. That would open an easy pathway to increase the availability of small, fuel efficient vehicles in the Canadian market.

I was cleaning out under the shelves in my back shed just the other day when I found a copy of fable, just chillin' there, waiting for a chance to copy itself yet again.
Anthropic's models run on terabytes of VRAM. It's not going to "just copy itself to other computers."

It was relatively cold out overnight, so with the high air exchange rate in the lab we're still only at 17 °C inside.

It's officially solid DMSO weather in the lab! #chemchat 🍂

Ordered coffee beans for delivery from a local #Ottawa roaster last evening. They showed up today at lunch. Roast Date on the package? This morning. Thanks Brown Bag Coffee!

Conspiracy theory time: this is how Red Bull give Liam Lawson another experience to see if they can replace Max at the end of the year through promotion instead of a new driver signing. #F1

Crazy thunderstorm rain and wind in Ottawa now (Nepean). Hardest I've ever seen. No warning from Environment Canada?

Finally no more tornado warnings in Kanata for rotation near Hawkesbury (or vice versa)

Them tornado warnings only show up while I'm trying to BBQ. Who can I speak to about this issue? #OttWeather

I think the discourse on "become an expert first then use LLM to do more research faster" is correct. While chemistry may have different types of questions than mathematics, we should keep the door open to the ask -> receive -> validate cycle like described here.
There's lots of stuff LLMs can't do, but if you want to disbelieve all the recent math, you have to believe a bunch of Fields Medalists with long track records are just straightforwardly lying about the thing they care most about. Here's a recent blog by Gowers: gowers.wordpress.com/2026/05/08/a...
A recent experience with ChatGPT 5.5 Pro
We are all having to keep revising upwards our assessments of the mathematical capabilities of large language models. I have just made a fairly large revision as a result of ChatGPT 5.5 Pro, to whi…

Yes, when I asked to convert 14.6 mm to an imperial measurement I certainly meant I wanted it in miles. Thanks Google!

PlotFTIR v1.3.0 is now on CRAN!

It now provides pretty printing for ingested spectral dataframes, showing spectral range, resolution, intensity type, number of samples, and sample IDs. 💅🖨️

A few other bugfixes were included too. 🐜

PlotFTIR: Plot FTIR Spectra
The goal of 'PlotFTIR' is to easily and quickly kick-start the production of journal-quality Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR) spectral plots in R using 'ggplot2'. The produced plots can be published...

Advertising instrumentation as not requiring an expert on staff leads to disgruntled customers when they have a week of downtime and a $5000 service call for a loose cable. It also alienates your most vocal proponents for purchasing new instruments.

Today, we're proud to announce our participation in the Lab Floods experience! This natural disaster sequel to Lab Power Failures seemed like a logical next step for our group.

Both are based on the well know Lab HVAC Control Issues, which has been a cultural phenom since the development of labs.
