I have not watched this since maybe 2002. Remember finding the twist underwhelming given its similarity to thon other film. Let's see how I fare this time.

O Pope my Pope
I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:

Do people like this know words mean things and that "underrated" means something quite specifically

Always funny when people get pissy about, of all things, *work to rule*. They are still doing their jobs, to the letter of the law in fact. That is causing problems is a serious indictment of how much extra people are expected to do in their job.

Thoroughly enjoyed my Mimic rewatch after seeing some of the practical models they used in the film museum in Lyon. Night Flier was a fucking blast. Pure Beyond Friday vibes and Miguel Ferrer playing the greatest prick. On YouTube too! Seek it out, friends!

Came back from leave to see my request for a SWY was denied by my complete shithole farce of a workplace. Love to not have another alleged benefit of the civil service available to me. And after they made me send social welfare payment info as part of the clearance process. A cushy job, they said

We urgently need to raise extra funds to help women like Lina get to a clinic safely. The average cost of care is over £900, and can be a lot higher.

Please donate if you can so someone like Lina can safely get to a clinic: www.asn.org.uk/no-other-way

It is wild how, in the North of Ireland, it is the costumed bigots with tribal drums & emblems, led by convicted paedophiles, who are on the side of the law, while bereaved mothers are the illegal gathering. Oh I forgot, that's just the new normal now.

I can assure you that, no matter how big the hit you have experienced as ubiquitous is on your perception, I have missed it.
This x100. Music is probably more diverse and less popularly shared than it's ever been right now. One person's musical experience and internal sonic landscape it likely to be very different from another's. And let's not forget the USA-centric assumptions embedded in the discourse...
I see people are doing discourse about whether or not it's possible to have avoided the current big hits.

It's possible and in fact quite easy. We really don't have a monoculture any more, honestly. That you find a song unavoidable means nothing.

Also reported by @gcooney93.bsky.social in the Irish Times tonight that following the team meeting and vote, some players “turned on Bazunu, one of whom is understood to have abused him to his face”
Ireland v Israel: Day of infamy exposes serious lack of leadership in FAI
Gavin Bazunu has been left brutally isolated as any semblance of squad unity has been utterly sundered

Kerr also says Bazunu was not informed about the squad meeting this morning - ostensibly called to consider the options after Bazunu refused to agree to a players’ statement sketched out last night - and didn’t attend.

The squad vote took place without his input or presence.

Almost 65,000 children in Gaza have been killed or injured by Israel since October 2023. Children also face forced famine, displacement, and denial of humanitarian aid. You don't get to annihilate a generation and then play a game of football, as if it never happened, as if it isn't still happening.

Ireland is missing out on the benefits of Europe’s defence spending boom because it lacks a significant defence industry, Minister of State Thomas Byrne has said.

The government is now changing the law to help more Irish firms compete for European defence work.

This wasn't a hack.

I'm not even exaggerating.

Resist this phrasing: Some people are feeding prompts into AIs and presenting the results as "their own stories." They're not. They're extruded plastic plagiarism. They may write their own prompts but they sure ain't writing their own stories, and nor is "AI" bc it's a fruit machine not agential.
WIRED featured our study on a phenomenon happening alongside the mainstream AI publishing controversies: Some people are using AI to write their own stories.

You may not like it, but it's happening, and it's interesting.

I wrote this quickly at a bus stop and didn't realize it would go viral, or else I would have worded it better. But the point is that the media is too credulous about AI killing everyone in 10 years (how?) when climate change is killing people now and will only get worse (we know exactly how).
I resigned from ExxonMobil today. I spent the last three years doing fossil fuel extraction research at both BP and ExxonMobil. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing to maximize extraction while the window to act closes, and gambling with our lives. More below.
