From my new novel…

Mandee, the dim-witted dispatcher: “I’m smizing right now. Cool, huh?” Liquor czar “Lippy” Lipowitz: “On the nose, you’ll get hints of dried fruit, dark chocolate, and toasted oak.” C-Note, the hip hop producer: “Where I sit, that is the head of the table.”
I accept that coffee shops are now called diners for reasons not worth going into here. But ironic, faux-vintage diners are not worthy of the name. And don’t get me started on fake speakeasies.

“It’s fun to make pictures because you live, actually you live five, ten, or fifteen, or twenty different lives… You’re not going every day to a shop and selling hats your whole life. No. I have a hat shop, but also I am a brain surgeon and… I’ve lived many lives.”

You’ve got good news? Brava! That said, the “screaming, crying, throwing up” idiom may not work the way you think it does.

Green Book won the 2019 Oscar Best Picture and Uncut Gems was not even nominated. Chew on that for a while.

Adding Naima to the playlist, now that we’re in Woodlawn with the olds.
I don’t have a playlist for the new thing I’m writing, but if I did, If 6 Was 9 and Slippin’ Into Darkness would both be on it.

Exec: I like the concept! Let’s hear some new voices! Like… hey, you!

DoorDash Guy: Me?

Exec: Yeah, you. Just out of curiosity, what do you think the greatest films of the 21st century are?

DoorDash Guy: The century’s not over yet.

Exec: Just… humor me. The century so far, what would you pick?

She lied without thinking, latched onto various trends. She wrote about a world peopled with tribes of “hitmen” who didn’t do other crimes, they simply offered murder for hire. She was simple, Justine realized—simple, sweet, and inartistic. But people like that could cause a lot of trouble.

Sharks
Saturn's rings

I got a chicken.
It came in a bucket with a side of mashed potatoes and a large sweet tea.
I feel better already.

Mr. Beshear, it's understandable you hate being in this situation, but it's time to drop by unannounced with a casserole and a request to chat for a few moments to offer some well wishes on a speedy recovery. You're up. Let's go.

Lots of things are like playing jazz, if you do them right.
“Personal dressing is like playing jazz,” André says. “You learn all the rhythms, you learn the scales, you learn all the rules, and then you learn to break them based on your own interests and your own sensibilities.”
