We stand with the @psraofficials.bsky.social against the physical intimidation and sexist abuse directed at a match official by an MLS NEXT Pro coach. MLS NEXT Pro must protect their officials, demand proper treatment of women, and enforce real accountability.

The Bucket Hat Brigade stands firmly with the Professional Referee Association (PSRA) in condemning the unacceptable actions of the MLS NEXT Pro head coach who physically intimidated and verbally demeaned a female match official. Forcefully grabbing an official and uttering sexist remarks like "Don't forget, this is a man's game" has absolute zero place in soccer—or anywhere else. A two-game suspension is a slap on the wrist that completely ignores U.S. Soccer's own mandatory minimums for physical grabs and acts of discrimination, which require at least a three-game suspension each. Coaches must be held to a higher standard, not given a pass when they violate basic dignity and safety guidelines. Women enrich every single level of the beautiful game. They deserve respect, safety, and full support on the pitch—not harassment and light-handed discipline. Our statement regarding MLS NEXT Pro and their handling of a recent disciplinary issue:
During a recent MLS NEXT Pro match, a male head coach committed two deliberate acts of physical abuse and sexism against a female official -- squeezing her hand and refusing to let go after being told to stop three times. This physical intimidation was compounded by a demeaning, sexist remark to the official: "Don't forget, this is a man's game." MLS NEXT Pro investigated and responded with a two-game suspension and other non-suspension discipline. U.S. Soccer policy states a “forceful grab” like this requires a minimum three-game suspension. Acts of discrimination also require a minimum three-game suspension. MLS NEXT Pro’s own manual also states that coaches are held to “a higher professional standard than players.” The League’s response falls drastically short of the right message to the participants, the referees, and the public. It needs to be reevaluated. Women make every level of this game better. They should not have to endure intimidation or degrading comments to prove it. Our female officials have proven their excellence on the world stage. They deserve the same respect, dignity, and safe working environment as every other official.
