Laptops in coffee shops feels very much like a “tragedy of the commons” kind of problem.

Like maybe the middle of the Sunday morning breakfast rush is not the time to take up a four-top with you, your laptop, your single small iced coffee, and your noisy phone call?

This year, I’m giving out extra candy to older kids just to piss off the joyless twats who want to be the Candy Police.

Not a terrible batch of finds today, although that big bone earlier was the biggest. My favorite might be this unusually-shaped tooth in the bottom left. It looks worn, but there are serrations all the way along the curve, so it’s always been that shape.

IMO, it is already absolutely unhinged shithead behavior to be out beachcombing or fossiling and not *pick up* trash while you’re at it, but if I see you *leaving new trash*, I’ll fucking fight you.

There’ a manager at my local coffee shop who’s both *transparently* an asshole and also not very good at his job. He’s like a masterclass in how not to manage people.

I wonder if the owners know.

What better way to celebrate Halloween than going looking for bones? Old bones! We’re going fossiling!

A nail polish brand I like is doing a collab collection for Death Note. You know, the 20-year old manga.

And some people are *very* big mad about “spoilers”. 🙄

(this will 100% win an Ig Nobel)
Wang et al. analyze genome data of four geographically isolated rumpless breeds of chicken. Findings support a model of parallel evolution in a specific cis-regulatory element of the IRX1/IRX2 intergenic region.

No one in the history of digital data storage has ever cried out "Oh no! I have too many backups!"
Writers: please back your work up in multiple places and formats. Pretty please.
Your periodic reminder: if you have data and you don't have it backed up on local storage — you *don't* have that data. And you have absolutely no guarantee that you will always have access to that data.

Dear iTunes: I don’t care if it’s one of the Murphys’ big hits, “The Season’s Upon Us” is a Christmas song and I don’t want to hear it except between December 20 and 25.

Grad school me: One day, I’ll get my PhD and refuse to know anything more complicated about computers than how to check my email.

Things current me had to stop doing science to explain this week:
- php vulnerabilities (3x)
- CVEs
- Okta (2x)
- workflow managers
- virtual machines
- Active Directory

Speaking of @peculiarityshop.bsky.social , pictures just do not do justice to how incredibly fucking cool this little syringe charm is. It’s actually a glass tube with a metal core, and a little “needle” tip pops out when you depress the plunger. EEEEEEEEE.
