you ever have the thought, at the beginning of some event, long or short, good or bad (the first morning of a week-long vacation, the first five minutes of a shift at work, etc.), "soon this will be over, and when it's over I will remember this thought, and it will be like it never happened at all"?

there is a nice consonance between my social position (cishet white middle class male) and my personality/psychology (introverted aloof nonsocial/schizoid asexual-ish). my privilege nicely compliments my peculiarities.

looking for a relaxing game I can play before sleep when I don't want to read, but most of my usual suspects are at least somewhat intellectually demanding.

thinking of getting Wardogs then only doing logistics runs and recon routes. driving and spotting, never firing a gun. it could be nice

Kant had an ethical theory about animals where he thought it was an impermissible category mistake to treat them as ends in themselves as if they were persons, but every "disrespectful" treatment of animals is impermissible anyway because we're obliged to not habituate ourselves for disrespect
one thing that i do not understand is the fact that the "alexa teaches children that women may be treated like machines" and "it is a sign of psychosis to treat a machine whose interface is social cognition with any respect" are the same group of scholars. sometimes even precisely the same scholars.

*Bill Hicks's "anyone dumb enough to want to be in the military should be allowed in" voice*
anyone dumb enough to watch billionaires' news networks or use image/video-based social media… I guess I forgot where I was going with this. suffice it to say that it looks like we all get what they deserve.

maybe global right-wing control of media, and therefore the minds and souls of the salt of the earth, is just a new medieval/early modern Catholic church. it probably won't take 1000 years to fall, though, but its death toll might be greater.

have we tried inventing a guy who can't be hailed by ideology?

Absent major institutional reforms that turn us into a multiparty democracy, totally transform SCOTUS, & significantly rein in the imperial presidency, this is the <best case> scenario of what is going to happen. Other, more permanent authoritarian scenarios are also possible.
Imagine if the 2030s is still just careening back and forth between a normal Democratic party and MAGA every 4 years. With every attempt to rebuild or repair scuttled every 4 years.
I really hate living in the interstitial.

Several weeks ago, Phil Tippett's legendary animation studio in Berkeley, CA closed. An anonymous hero noticed a folder of CDs. This turned out to be hundreds of unseen hi-res images and videos from Star Wars, Robocop, Jurassic Park, etc. ~90 isos for you to browse:

I'm 71. For years I often dream I'm up in a tree or not too high building & I jump down knowing I won't be hurt. This is a very pleasant dream & actually enjoy it. At 71, I know my average lifespan is maybe 10 years if I'm lucky. I'm ok with that. All my dreams are very pleasant

my own private top 40, 2006–2026. artists ranked by number of songs listed to, not listening time or personal rating. very heavily weighted toward my prime last.FM-ing years (2006–2009), so it's not representative of my last 10 or 5, but it has value as a sketch of my preferences' foundations.

RIP Lant (Venom).
re: bm's originators, I'm more of a Mercyful Fate guy, and I always thought of the first wave primarily as a prelude to the real deal Norwegian scene, but respect where it's due. they were invaluable in progressing metal from heavy to extreme. welcome to hell, baby!

I disagree with 10-year-old Christina Ricci and the rest of the cast of 'The Addams Family' (1991) on whose behalf she spoke: Uncle Fester should have been left as the imposter, Gordon Craven; in my headcanon, at least, he still is. it adds a "found family" theme to the Addams's other virtues.

with its high of ~73⁰F (23⁰C), yesterday was the last warm day of the year. or, it would be in any other lifetime. I thank global warming for two things, one of which is making my local climate less unbearable. here's to hoping for a hot October.
(my condolences to the rest of y'all. move north?)

I'm at least twenty years too late to the topic, and I don't know how often others have observed this (I haven't read anything on it—I prefer to precipitate my own solutions, sometimes), but regarding the aesthetics of liminal spaces:

that's a nice moderate-priority login assistance–related incident you have there.
it'd be a shame if someone escalated it after hours to high priority while it's assigned to a team that's not on call, tanking their service-level agreement metrics and clogging their inboxes with breach notifications.
