I recently built PolySNiP-nf because standard CRISPR tools failed in polyploids. When a colleague’s octoploid strawberry data showed 30% "missing" reads and false chimera calls, the issue wasn't the sequencing, it was the diploid assumptions built into the software.

Our work @niab-uk.bsky.social identifying the gene behind the hyperbranching C-variant phenotype in mycoprotein production has been featured as an R&D highlight in the @gfi.org State of the Industry 2026 report.

A small step for genomics, but a big leap for sustainable protein efficiency. 🍄🧬

It's been a bit quiet here, so let me reintroduce myself. I'm Jordan, a bioinformatician working on fungal genomics, computational biology, and AI engineering at Niab in Cambridge. Expect occasional commentary on papers, pipeline tips, and the occasional opinion on where AI meets biology.

Happy to announce that our research paper is now published in PLOS ONE!

We discovered that a CACTA-like transposon in the Ans-1 gene is responsible for the apricot fruit colour in the raspberry cultivar 'Varnes'.

A huge thank you to my fantastic coauthors!

A CACTA-like transposon in the Anthocyanidin synthase 1 (Ans-1) gene is responsible for apricot fruit colour in the raspberry (Rubus idaeus) cultivar ‘Varnes’
Cultivated raspberries (Rubus idaeus L.) most commonly bear small, red, highly aromatic fruits. Their colour is derived predominantly from anthocyanins, water soluble polyphenolic pigments, but as wel...

I've published my first web app, a dashboard for rapid exploratory data analysis and visualisation. My aim was to open up data analysis and visualisation for those unfamiliar with R/Python, or those of us just wanting a super quick look at their data.

Mutation of the LRG1 Rho-GAP gene is responsible for the hyper branching C-variant phenotype in the Quorn mycoprotein fungus Fusarium venenatum A3/5
Background Quorn mycoprotein, a protein-rich meat alternative, is produced through large-scale fermentation of the fungus Fusarium venenatum. However, a major challenge during F. venenatum fermentatio...
