The Strike Ballot
I mentioned a couple of weeks ago that the Irish Federation of University Teachers (IFUT), of which I am a member, was planning a ballot on industrial action. The reason for the ballot is that the Public Service Agreement, covering pay and working conditions for all public service workers in Ireland, lapsed at the end of June this year (2026) and there is currently no pay settlement for the second half of this year or next year.

What about the cost of NOT investing in public transports? Air quality, missed climate targets, traffic congestion - there’s more to public transport that ticket sales. It doesn’t make sense to treat it as an enterprise that needs to break even.

If you want 1.5C, 1.8C, 2C, overshoot, no-overshoot, etc, then they all require the same thing: rapid short-term emission reductions reaching net zero CO2 emissions as soon as possible.
This has been clear from the IPCC Special Report on 1.5C, which depicts "overshoot" on its cover!

I attended the unveiling of a memorial to the dead women & children of Sean Ross Abbey where 1,090 "illegitimate children" died over a 37-year period, many of malnutrition.
The nuns still own the land so their permission had to be sought to erect a memorial to their victims.
