This is a legitimately astounding piece of work.
I didn't trust AI to tell me whether AI will kill us all in the next decade. So I turned to the one branch of science more reliable than LLMs: Bracketology
The AI Apocalypse Bracket: Just How Doomed Are We, Really?
Is AI really likely to wipe out humanity within the next decade? We used the most scientific tool in existence to get an answer.

There are two songs I really love from YHF, "Radio Cure" and "Reservations". But there are six songs from WBC so it's White Stripes for me. This may be impacted by the current state of the world and my desire to listen to something FUN, admittedly. Add your vote!
The Best Album of 2001 Round 7 Match #128: FINAL MATCH
#1 Wilco, YANKEE HOTEL FOXTROT
VS.
#3 The White Stripes, WHITE BLOOD CELLS

It’s a failure of imagination and wider reading on the part of tech guys to invent Roko’s Basilisk, a thought experiment about a vengeful god that will punish you for not cooperating, while their tech enrages Mother Nature, a vengeful god we’ve had available in our pantheon for millennia.

It seems to me that people who have been interacting with programmed video game characters for years are way less impressed with LLMs than people who have never had a real conversation with a computer before and think it makes the computer alive.

it's objectively hilarious that capital-p Poptimism peaked in the age of the most vapid megastars - Sheeran and Drake above all - and is now a confused mess just in time for the genuinely incredible hyper literate pop era of PinkPantheress, Olivia, Sabrina, Doechii and co but whaddyagonnado

I think an underrated aspect of taste forming is not just the new stuff you consume when you're 17, but the people who passed away when you are 17 and you dove into their stuff and discovered how cool they were. It's something that deepened your foundation.

Macklemore is a real case study in how you can be Kind of a Dumb Guy but still end up broadly on the right side of most things merely by being generally quite good-natured, because questions like "should trans people exist?" and "is it bad to do a genocide?" are actually really uncomplicated.

A pack of Dunning-Kruger cases cooking up a Temu Yaldabaoth out of Potter fanfic was much funnier before they achieved ownership of all the main surveillance and communications systems outside of China, took political control of America and fired up the genocide engines.
"Roko's Basilisk" being their particular invented mythological figure of The AI That {they believe] Will Inevitably Rule The World, So You'd Better Start Appeasement Rituals, For It Will Be A Vengeful God

just like every other eschatological millenarian sect

... 'rationalist', yeah
Roko’s basilisk isn’t real but the people who think it is are very real & will hurt you

I have a Anna Karenina stance on singing voices: pretty voices are all alike; every fucked-up voice is fucked-up in its own unique way. My record collection is structured accordingly.

would explain how quickly we memory-holed the pandemic
A friend of mine once told me he thinks we are genetically predisposed forget the horrors of childbirth and raising babies otherwise we would never reproduce as a species.

I wonder if we have an innately programmed collective amnesia about other horror for similar reason.

I do think these AI Doomer developers are sincere. The profession is self-selecting for science-fiction fans who think Issac Asimov is a predictive model and the singularity is imminent. They've convinced themselves they're locked into a matrix death spiral unless outside forces intervene.

If you hold back development of dangerous tech, some other company will leap in and do the thing and then they will "win". So everyone is forced to do reckless development by capitalism! Whereas if the government puts in a ceiling then all companies have to stop. Seems to be the operating logic
“Please regulate us” is so funny to me. No one is forcing the big tech companies to act recklessly. If AI companies really believe in the danger, they don’t have to release more models. Time to act as if one is constrained by the regulation one desires.
