🧪🚨 We are ecstatic to share this preprint from our amazing postdoc @cnfxc.bsky.social. Corey solved a long-standing question in the field of transport biology (since the 90s!), identifying SLC16A6 as a melanosomal tyrosine transporter. Check it out! @uofubiochem.bsky.social @hhmi-science.bsky.social
Melanin synthesis begins with the shuttling of tyrosine into the lumen of organelles called melanosomes, but the transporter performing this function has remained elusive for over 30 years. Our new preprint identifies SLC16A6 as a melanosomal tyrosine transporter!

SLC16A6 is a tyrosine transporter for the melanosome
Cells enable specialized metabolism by compartmentalizing metabolic pathways into distinct organelles, which requires the membrane transport of metabolites. In melanocytes, the amino acid tyrosine is ...

New Drug Protects Mitochondria and Prevents Kidney Injury in Mice
If the drug works in people, it could prevent kidney injury in high-risk populations, or potentially even treat other diseases that affect mitochondria, like heart failure and diabetes.
