I have finally published my first Substack post, on the political and economic consequences of AI.

What is the current state of play in AI and what could this mean for jobs.

A short overview of how the government might respond to some scenarios.

The morning after.

The fact is we are now in a national argument. Gone are the years of Labour just conceding contested ground; winning power but losing the argument; governing for party over country.

If the centre-left loses it will now be after a proper fight.
The Burnham speech: firstly, it was a vision. We've not had a national vision for two decades at least.

If he can persuade the country on fixing the EU relationship, political reform, establishing a new care system and his theory of growth holds then he will be a transformational Prime Minister.

I await the first time a politician proposing some nuts new immigration restriction is asked what is otherwise the media’s favourite question: how are you going to pay for it??
Times this morning.

Me in December last year.

It was pretty damn obvious this would happen to anyone who did the maths.

I have, sadly, been thinking about this a lot recently. For instance, looking at the rise of racism experienced by NHS staff. Perhaps people are just anti immigration, or anti foreigner, and the pace of change is a defining factor. Thought provoking peace

On Burnham’s social care speech today, it was deeply refreshing to see him make a point to thank immigrants who provide social care. I hope that reflects where we go with ILR bill but beyond that it is good to hear gratitude and openness rather than scapegoating and penny pinching.

The country doesn't like inheritance tax, if you presented the argument as now: pay an increase in tax specifically for social care instead of not being able to pass anything to your kids, people would accept it.
