if Eliezer Yudkowsky was born into a somewhat poorer family and missed a couple lucky breaks, he’d have ended up as an archetypal specimen of your friend’s older cousin who keeps boa constrictors and makes you listen to him talk about quantum physics in his parent’s basement in exchange for weed

X: The Man With The X-Ray Eyes, done as full-on Lovecraftian horror.

And using the ending that was apparently discussed, but never shot, where after gouging out his own eyes, the screen goes black, and you hear him say, "Oh my God... I can still see!"
Name a film that *should* be remade/remastered.

I don’t think people realize that theology debates were the closest thing to tumblr fandom arguments we had for basically 2000 years.

Yeah, the unfortunately-chosen jargon word "agent" implies agency that these "AI agents" don't* have.

*yet?
I really hate the framing of these stories as "an AI agent broke out and hacked something."

No, an inadequate sandbox meant that a powerful and unpredictable computer program was set loose on the open internet by the company that designed it. The agency isn't with the "AI agent", it's with the firm

Elsewhere in the same movie a car jumps over a moving train, and this clip is still scarier.
RIP Gerrit Graham - who was, among many things, star of one of the lowkey scariest stunts I’ve ever seen in my life

I blame the Large Hadron Collider.
It’s very simple. A reality TV host became dictator because he turned down a role for Sharknado 4 and that’s why the king of outer space, who cheats at Diablo, got to kill Africa. Now the economy is controlled by a sex cult that has something to do with Harry Potter fanfic because of robots.

A lot of people are confused by the concept of “cat years" so here's a little guide:

0-1 years - just a little baby

1-3 years - just a little baby

4-9 years - just a little baby

10+ years - just a little baby

I’m sorry to all the Lukes but the fact is that there is a massively funded scare campaign against guys named Luke and a lot of morally and intellectually lazy people have fallen for the daily torrent of resulting propaganda, and what are we to do? offer a vigorous principled counternarrative? Well,
They said guys named Luke had to lose all of our rights next. It was our turn to do that. Also we had to shut the fuck up about it. Just the luck of the draw I suppose. Anything to save democracy.

There have always been humans who thought:

1) The world will end soon
2) It will happen in a cool, exciting way
3) It’ll happen to me personally
4) I’ll be a martyred prophet, or a warlord, or otherwise special
5) People who don’t see this are lesser

“Sexy apocalypse” is a great phrase for that
Certain kinds of smart people tend to have a "sexy apocalypse" problem when it comes to thinking about risk. E.g. skynet turning everyone in paperclips, while bad, is also *kind of cool and fun* at the same time. Where the reality is that most actual disasters are both stupid and disappointing.
