I attended the annual conference of the International Society for Environmental Epidemiology (ISEE), held in Munich from August 30 to September 2. This is a belated reflection and photo dump. I started attending ISEE in 2009. I think I have missed it twice, so this was probably my fifteenth time. With around 2,000 participants, it was apparently the largest meeting yet.

난 일본 작가들이 “일본에서도 전쟁피해자가 있었어. 전쟁은 나빠, 전쟁 일으키면 안 돼!”를 묘사하는 걸 “지금은” 보고 싶지 않아. “일본은 가해자였고 많은 사람들에게 죄를 지었어. 반성하고 사죄하고 다시는 전쟁을 일으키지 말아야 해.”라고 메시지를 던지는 작품들을 “지금 충분히 많이” 보고 싶어. 늬들 피해는 그 다음에 묘사할 자격이 있어.

<코드 기어스>는 아주 옛날에 봤었는데…… 지금 떠올리니 일본 하는 짓이 지금 한국 극우들 하는 짓이나 똑같다는 생각이 든다. 하긴 전세계 극우가 다 그렇겠지. 가해자고 기득권임에도, “내가 피해자고 내가 소수자다!“라며 당위성마저 뺏고 싶은 것. <도둑맞은 가난>에서 박완서 선생님이 보였던 통찰처럼 가난마저도 피해마저도 억압당한 것마저도 죄다 빼앗아 가려는 것. 지들이 침탈하고 강탈했으면서도 피해자 위치인 척 앙앙불락하는 것.
