So I did the Bluesky "roast" thing and it said, Sarah, maybe lay off the jellyfish posts.

But there should only ever be MORE jellyfish content. Everyone knows this.

But this is extremely accurate because I did once go on a quest with some jellyfish colleagues to find somewhere that would serve us a proper edible jellyfish dish. My labmate in the sea cucumber lab spent a week following his grandmother's recipe so we could all eat braised sea cucumber

The two rules of software development:
- Up-front thinking is Waterfall; we can only learn by shipping
- There's no room on the roadmap for rework, so everything needs to be done right the first time

Bosses love AI because they think it can give them up-front certainty on the cheap. But it can't.
The fake double diamond is dead. The real double diamond is immortal.
AI is not a substitute for divergent thinking, and the false certainty it gives will never save you from having to iterate.

A throwback for Ctenophore Day! 🧪🐡🪼 If you ever wondered how to pronounce Ctenophore, today is October 4, the 10th month, fourth day and it sounds like ten oh four. They are a phylum of marine invertebrates, like this comb jelly which look a bit like jellyfish, but instead of stinging tentacles 🧵

This somehow got turned off automatically for me, so I had to go back into my settings to turn on “require alt text” again. Might have happened to you too; worth a check to keep your posts accessible to all.
Here’s how! Go to “Accessibility” in Bluesky settings and turn that first switch on. Never forget alt text again.

Last year one of those immortal jellyfish got a PhD.

Whether they retain it on regeneration has become a real hot-button issue in academia.

Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) captured this slightly less spectacular specimen at 1,000 meters (3,300 feet) deep in Monterey Bay during the summer of 2021.

The scientific name "Halitrephes maasi" honors German zoologist Otto Maas, with Halitrephes meaning "sea-nourished".

The Pacific Northwest is so gorgeous. And I loved seeing all the plants and wildlife - we even saw jellyfish as well as several sea lions swimming through the marina!

“There's nothing wrong with you if you planted something and then your plant died. Just try again.”

So ... what can you plant now? @samdelgado.bsky.social asked a few experts:
What foods and flowers to plant for fall in D.C.
Autumn is actually the best time of year to put in perennials (and there's still time for many veggies, too).

Hey, ProPublica reporter Jake Pearson here. I’m taking over the account to tell you about my new story.

For months, I posed as a problem gambler on DraftKings to test the company's "responsible gaming" safeguards.

Spoiler alert: They made me a VIP — and I lost $10K. Here's how it all went down. 🧵

It’s SUCH an important framing to change from ‘here is the solution I want’ to ‘here is the problem I have’. I see it all the time in teams of scientists and engineers (software AND hardware!).
This is exactly why I always say that instead of having sales-oriented people promising customers features they're asking for and then forcing devs to implement them, you have to involve the devs by asking the customers to explain the reason why they actually want these features -
Even so: the experience of working through your requirements with someone else is clarifying and disciplining, because while *you* are the domain expert on *your* needs, that doesn't mean you're the domain expert on how to *address* those needs.
