AI skills in film and television: A research report commissioned by Screen Berkshire, a skills cluster of the BFI

I am excited to share this report that brings together fascinating insights from professionals! The use of AI tools in production is NOT what we expected.

Ofsted has such a sterling reputation.

I’m convinced that AI companies started with generative images and text as a con. They needed people to think their product was more revolutionary than mere SaaD/B2B tech. They needed mega hype to justify the cost before it became clear most people wouldn’t use this stuff.
Technology enthusiasts severely overestimate the average person’s desire or willingness or capacity to build and use AI agents. I understand some work roles that could mandate or encourage it but that is no way a tech revolution. Agents are best for structured, clearly delineated tasks.

I am tired of having to pretend that the value of studying my discipline solely rests on the "marketable skills" we teach. Sometimes things are just worth knowing and doing because they make your life bigger and richer.
I don't want to make civic arguments about history. I don't want to make instrumentalist arguments about history. I want engineers to understand my discipline is rigorous too and if not I want to be able to make fun of them forever because no historian ever built a bridge that broke in the wind.

all of the openers for Ed Sheeran’s tour have now canceled thanks to Robert Kraft but he will be adding a new opening act, The Streisand Effect
it seems to me most likely that the whole tour will be canceled now as a result of Kraft’s intervention injecting his own politics into the event and Sheeran’s concession to it

One of the biggest lessons of the past 10 years is that a vast % of the powerful and influential - politics, journalism, entertainment, tech etc - are the thinnest skinned whiny babies known to humanity, who absolutely cannot tolerate 1 moment of being (told they’re) in the wrong.
"you cannot be mad at me. you cannot make me feel bad. making me feel even a second of shame is unacceptable. you cannot tell me i am hurting you. i am good. and you must always reassure me that i am good" shit.

Pedagogy is not some new, unsolved problem awaiting its Silicon Valley disruptor. If you want good teaching in any given subject, it’s there to be had.

If you just don’t want to pay for it, then all we’re really talking about is how much you want something for nothing. That’s nothing new, either.
We know how to teach books in the age of AI: small classes, close reading, research-engaged learning (which is how you ’let students see you struggle’). The issue is nobody will hire and pay the requisite # of faculty to offer this.

Ray Harryhausen didn't film his actors doing a choreographed fight with thin air and then use backscreen projection and double exposure to add an army of skeletons interacting with identical miniatures of the set and props just so you could tell me that AI is "inevitable."

Ray Harryhausen's stop-motion skeletons in Jason and the Argonauts are amazing even now.

He animated the sequence by himself for more than four months -- without computers or even an easy way to check his work. We're looking into how he did it:
