All of these places understand the value of ragebait. Some of them relied on it even before social media, but it’s only become a bigger part of the business.

My guess is that they're often given this info and explicitly told they can only use it for a book that comes out much later. (They honor this for professional reasons and bc otherwise the source will deny it.) Which may be understandable but is often abused.
Re: criticism that Haberman has sat on critical info for a book. “Should we just publish everything when we hear it?” Says it take months to confirm these stories, people don’t understand process.

They also spent a couple of months saying Talarico was a transgender vegetarian*, so it’s bizarre and stupid to act like they have some sort of serious, reasonable agenda.

The people suggesting, or demanding, this kind of moderation don’t care about trans people. I’m not sure they care about anything in the real world.
Lots of fascinating observations in this piece. A key one is that those demanding calculated moderation on trans rights are not acknowledging where the logic *or* the politics of that position actually lead, which is to a terrible place:

I hope so. It definitely proved they hadn’t remade the country and the culture in their image, even though a bunch of rich people (some major publishers and pundit types notably among them) thought they had. Or wished. The administration never he majority support and it was already getting worse.

If Trump appointed a horse to the cabinet, the Washington Post would say it shows he’s in touch with rural American, Axios would say it’s a clever strategy to goad Democrats to freak out, Johnson would say he hadn’t heard about it, and Hegseth would start shooting soldiers full of horsetosterone.
How did all those experienced politicians and seasoned generals end up losing to a kid who was only 19 years old when he first showed up on the scene? Because they were all like this. Maybe with a big dose of lead poisoning to boot, which we're also still working out of our system.

just want to say that when a politician campaigns on/publicly states transphobic positions it will actually be reflected in policy and is not some sort of 4d chess electoral rhetoric move
