My new piece for @itep.org on the déjà vu nature of the fight over IRS funding this fall.
IRS Cuts Could Cruise on Autopilot; New Bill Aims to Restore Funding to Help Taxpayers and Fight Tax Cheats
This fall, Congress could allow billions of dollars in IRS funding to disappear on autopilot. However, the Stop CHEATERS Act would restore the multi-year mandatory funding rescinded from the IRA and a...

Before calling someone a “dirtbag,” the Senator should have had his facts straight. An apology is in order.

Glad one of us knew the difference between the Atlanta Hawks and the Iowa Hawkeyes!

Important to point out: if it wasn't for Amy Klobuchar standing up and pushing back, Republican Chuck Grassley would've just let the BULLSHIT go by without question, and Schmidt's Kabuki sound bit would be all over Trump controlled media.

That's how it's done.

There are so few feel-good stories in 2026 that when I find one, I immediately run to Bluesky to bathe in the schadenfreude
I hope this headline haunts Eric Schmitt for the rest of his pathetic political career.

Political purges and a failing war of choice launched against generals’ advice has left the Army largely rudderless, while the war continues with no end in sight.

Empowering political leaders who think international success comes from shallow bluster and white men doing war crimes has consequences.

To summarize: the U.S. is not a broke household one missed paycheck from ruin! It's the wealthiest society in human history, one that has funneled an ever-larger share of its gains to the top and then told itself it can't afford to invest in everyone else.

U.S. debt held by the public just topped 100% of GDP, and CBO says it'll break the WWII-era record (106%) before 2030. But measure debt against total private wealth instead, and it's only ~half its 1945 peak.

A thread on why the yardstick matters. 🧵

Doublethink: the state insists you believe the president is brilliant and commandingly in charge AND had no control of, nor responsibility for, the top public health official in his administration, who operated right under the president’s nose at the president’s discretion, victimizing him and you.
I just keep leaning into if Fauci made such poor decisions and is so evil, surely the greatest, most smartest President ever would have seen right through it or stopped it.

This is the real fruit of the 60-year RW propaganda war against Democrats & RW domination of media: no matter how bad & obviously a Republican fucks up, no matter how low their approval dips, people still don't like the other party, the one that keeps repairing the country after GOP fuckups.
Economic outlook is worsening and Trump is getting blamed, CNBC survey finds
The public is as depressed about the economy as it has been since the years just after the pandemic, according to the All-America Economic Survey.

Absolutely deranged understanding of American government and the current times. The number of Justices isn't even in the Constitution, it's a statute from 1869!

It is, in fact, not essential our Republic has a hyper-partisan GOP SCOTUS that makes sure its favored candidates and policies always win.
I just listened to a panel with David French and someone from the Brennan Center vociferously argue against expanding the Court. French said it would lead to “the dissolution of the republic.” About a third of the audience applauded. We need to get a policy culture that’s willing to do what it takes

I wish more journalists would point out that Sen. McConnell and Rep. Tom Kean (missed 4 months of work) are/were essentially on paid sick & medical leave.

The same employment protection they’ve spent their careers blocking other Americans from having.

My kids have often heard me riff on the Churchill quote about democracy. Of the USA, I say "we're the worst country in the world, except for every other country."

To embrace American patriotism—as opposed to blind nationalism—is to celebrate the very best parts of our country w/o denying the harm

Son came in to ask me if that was thunder he kept hearing and I said no it’s the fireworks on the Mall. He looked at his phone and said, “but it’s July 5???” Followed by: “he had one job! Fucking Trump.”

Anyway, I’m raising that kid right.
There is exactly one thing that needs to happen on Independence Day. One tradition

The only thing that absolutely had to happen was fireworks, and Trump fucked it up because he couldn't stop talking

My son asked me what Cuba was like when I studied there in 2003. I told him how shocking it had been to see every billboard, every wall, etc, not plastered w/ads for Coke or McDonald’s but w/the leader’s face. It was deeply unsettling, unlike anything I’d seen before… now it’s my regular DC commute

I finished my deep dive into WWI and am now working my way thru 1930s Germany. The parallels are disturbing. But it’s the victimhood that stands out time and again.

Every invasion, every war of choice, every act of brutality was “forced” upon them by the victims. Even in their personal diaries.
It is core to the nature of reactionary politics that its adherents *always* conceive of themselves as aggrieved victims, no matter how much power they amass. It's a permission structure for their own lawlessness & violence.
