There aren't many days when you can kayak off Start Point, renowned for one of Britain's most dangerous tidal races. But yesterday the stars aligned, so I bunked off work. Delighted to see Rupert Kirkwood (the Lone Kayaker) out there. He took this picture of me +1. Before you ask: yes, it's real. 🧵

There are two simultaneous anti-choice protests raking place right now outside City Hall, 20 feet apart, one for the Catholics and one for the Protestants. This place has its drawbacks but ypu have to concede there is a rich seam in the comedy mines.

New, from me:
Everything seems awful, but Co. Kerry, Ireland is great. A photo essay on what to do if you visit (especially for Killarney and Dingle). Replies are open, so please add your own suggestions.

This (and other negative pieces) gives me the impression that RTÉ is disappointed with increased sales of EVs. The software "concerns" cited for EVs apply just as much to IC cars. Odd.

Devastating news shared with us by our member organisation, Carra Mask Corrib Water Protection Group!

Much more needs to be done to protect freshwater pearl mussels and the clean, free-flowing rivers on which they depend.

The chart below shows why Lough Neagh is still green.
Learn about how the rise of factory farming in Northern Ireland, its manure and the plight of our great lake are intertwined in my report for @thedetailtv.bsky.social on research by @friends-earth.bsky.social 👇

Maddening. Not least because it's so darn easy to reduce, or even stop, your meat consumption.
Why is Lough Neagh still green?
Some of the answers are in my report for @desmog.com on major research mapping Northern Ireland's pig & poultry farms, rising manure, pollution increases in a lake that provides 50% of the region's drinking water & where the meat goes 👇

Another one bites the dust as new advice from @icesmarine.bsky.social for plaice in the Irish Sea is that fishing for it should stop entirely - advice which will be ignored as it has been for other species.

Another casualty of destructive bottom trawling.

IrTimes graphic showing (zero/minimal) impact of VAT reduction on restaurant prices. A similar graph on staff wages wd also show zero or minimal. Unsurprising. The graph we'll never see is the impact on commercial rents which is where the bulk of this €680 m pa subsidy goes. Corporate Welfare.

The hospitality industry wants their VAT cut to 10%. It will cost £12bn

Who benefits?

❌ The smallest most vulnerable businesses? Nope. 45% get nothing.
❌ Consumers? Nope - prices won't fall.
✅ Nearly half the cash goes straight to large chains. McDonald's gets £400m.

It was a packed agenda of amazing speakers, but the questions from the audience and deep conversations over the breaks is where really meaningful value was distilled.
