If you’ve seen this article, you may be sitting with anger, pain, or just exhaustion at dealing with another helping of colonial nonsense.

We feel a responsibility to speak back when these colonizing narratives show up, yet again, in such a prominent venue. endangeredlanguages.com/story/respon...

People should be able to tell the difference between "Good Books" and "Fun Reads". There are many books that are objectively NOT Good Books, but they're Fun Reads, and there are many books that are NOT Fun Reads, but are very Good Books

They're not mutually exclusive, but they're different criteria

Gandalf delivers some words of wisdom about AI through Pope Leo XIV.
Why Pope Leo quoted Gandalf in his response to the rise of AI.
In a moving message this weekend, Pope Leo XIV spoke out against the rising tide of AI and urged his followers to recommit to a radical humanism. The message—delivered in the form of an encyclical …

Each AI chatbot has its own distinctive writing style—just like humans have idiolects

What I think is neat about this is that it can potentially help us identify more accurately whether something was written with AI.

So, um... this is bad. Really bad. I looked at the letters that were translated by the AI, and the very first one I found was almost entirely hallucination. Thread:
The new project mapping 7,000+ ancient letters is impressive: romanletters.org . The database & geolocation (although noting Pleiades rather than just AWMC would be nice) are great. But I absolutely cannot get over use of AI—however transparent—for translation.

I read a book called "The horse, the wheel, and language" about Proto-Indo-European when I was around 19. Both the reconstruction and the language itself were absolutely fascinating for me, and fell in love with linguistics
Do you remember how you found out that linguistics existed and was a thing you could get enthusiastic about?
