DEEP SPACE MAIL CO. IS NOW RECEIVING SUBSCRIBERS

Somewhere past the edge of the charted routes, a small mail office keeps sending things back.

It's mail. Real paper, through a real letterbox, on a real day each month - from somewhere that isn't quite here.

💬 Scientists have been hunting for dark matter for 50 years. They haven't found it yet.

So we're putting it to you: what do you think dark matter actually is?
Tell us in the comments - are you team WIMP, team modified gravity, or do you have your own theory? No physics degree required. 👇
September 30, 2026 at 3:02 PM
🌑 Everything you can see, feel, touch makes up only about 5% of the universe. The rest? We don't know what it is.

We call it dark matter.
❌ Doesn't emit light
❌ Doesn't absorb light
✅ Has mass and gravitational effects
✅ Makes up about 27% of the universe's total energy content

🚀 THIS WEEK IN SPACE | 28 September 2026

Two space milestones collide this week!

☄️ DRACONID METEOR SHOWER (28 September - TONIGHT)

Fun Fact Friday!
21st September 2026

The nearest star to Earth outside our Solar System - Proxima Centauri - is about 4.24 light years away. At the speed of the New Horizons spacecraft, it would take roughly 73,000 years to reach it.
September 25, 2026 at 1:02 PM
The TRAPPIST-1 system hosts seven Earth-sized rocky planets. All seven are potentially in a range of distances that could support liquid water. Three of them sit squarely in the habitable zone. If we find biosignatures, the implications for the prevalence of life in the universe are staggering.
September 24, 2026 at 3:02 PM
If you asked an astronomer in 1990 how many planets were known beyond our Solar System, the answer would have been zero.

The question "are we alone?" is slowly becoming a scientific rather than purely philosophical one. The answer, whatever it turns out to be, will be the most profound discovery.

🪐As of 2026, we've confirmed over 5,700 planets orbiting other stars. And we've barely started looking.

The holy grail is an Earth-sized rocky planet in the habitable zone of its star. We've found several candidates. Whether any are truly habitable remains unknown. The universe is full of worlds. 🌍

18th September 2026

Saturn's rings are enormous in width - up to 282,000 km across - but incredibly thin, often less than 100 metres deep.

🛸 On 12 November 2014, humanity did something that had never been done before. We landed a spacecraft on a comet.

Rosetta ended its mission in 2016 by deliberately crashing into the comet's surface. A fitting farewell.

☄️ Some people wait a lifetime and never see one. Others happened to look up at the right moment.

There are always several comets within reach of binoculars at any given time - we'll keep you posted.

Comets: Dirty snowballs from the edge of the solar system.
☄️ They've terrified civilisations, inspired myths, and may have brought the ingredients for life to Earth. Comets have been observed throughout recorded history. Each return is a small connection to observers thousands of years before us.

There are more stars in the observable universe than grains of sand on all of Earth's beaches combined.

🔭 If you only ever look up one deep sky object, make it this one.

The Orion Nebula - catalogued as M42 - is the closest large star-forming region to Earth, sitting about 1,344 light-years away. It's a stellar nursery roughly 24 light-years across.

Will you be looking for it this winter? 👇

Every nebula tells a story. Some are birth announcements. Others are epitaphs.

Stars are born inside molecular clouds - cold, dense regions of gas and dust. When gravity causes a region to collapse, material heats up and eventually fusion ignites. A star is born. We are, genuinely, made of stardust
September 9, 2026 at 3:00 PM
🌈 Some of the most beautiful objects in the universe are, essentially, clouds.

A nebula (plural: nebulae) is a vast cloud of gas and dust in space. They come in several types, but what unites them all is this: they are the raw material of stars, or the remnants left behind when stars die.

The Sun makes up 99.86% of all the mass in the Solar System. Everything else - all the planets, moons, asteroids, and comets - is essentially a rounding error.

🌀 Jupiter is the largest planet in our Solar System - and it may have helped make Earth habitable.

Have you ever spotted Jupiter's moons through binoculars? It's easier than you'd think! 👇

🪐Controversial question incoming...
If you HAD to live on another planet (or moon) in our Solar System - with whatever tech is needed to survive-where would you choose?
Here are your options to consider:
- Mars
- Europa (Jupiter's moon)
- Titan (Saturn's moom)
- Venus cloud cities
- A Jupiter moon

☀️ Eight planets. Hundreds of moons. Millions of smaller bodies. One very average star.

Our Solar System formed about 4.6 billion years ago from a collapsing cloud of gas and dust.
A quick tour of the neighbourhood:

We're still exploring our own backyard.
