Canadian living in The Maritimes! Lover of all things fermented, boardgames, cooking, and the outdoors. He/Him
Saw a post from someone saying, "I have never regretted going for a swim."

I'm thinking you have obviously never launched a canoe under questionable circumstances.

I for one have had a few regrettable swims.

Roll a fully loaded canoe, with all your shit, tell me you don't regret that swim.

It looks so pretty but unfortunately it did not set. I'm guessing I didn't boil it long enough to fully hit 105oC, so it went back on the stove for a second boil.
If it still doesn't set then, I'll add extra pectin and try again!
Crab apple jelly will happen!

My crab apple jelly is in jars and cooling! It looks beautiful and is sweet and appley already!

As food keeps getting more expensive I keep reminding myself I need to forage, hunt, and fish more.
Use more of my sweat equity and less money to keep my belly and freezer full.

I am making crab apple jelly. Well, my wife and I are making it.
We foraged the crab apples together. She did the work to remove the stems and the blossom end and did the initial boiling.
I'm boiling the juice and the sugar for the jelly! I'm hoping she'll help with the bottling and canning. #TeamB

Productive day of food processing here at Chez B!

By the time we removed the stems and the bad grapes we ended up with 8.5 litres of crushed grapes with their juices. Added some water and sugar to bring up the volume and up the starting gravity.

Another first harvest for us, my grapes! We almost got some last year but were beaten to them by the local wildlife.

We had a dry summer so they're not as plump this year but they are very sweet!

These are white wine grapes, L'Acadie Blanc. Tomorrow I'll clean them up and weigh my harvest!

18 apples. That doesn't sound like much but it's the first time that the tree I planted in my front yard has produced apples!

There may only be 18 of them but they're my apples.

I wrote a new recipe today and tried making it for the first time, Rhubarb Miso Mostarda.

Turned out fantastic, I'll be serving it tonight served over pork chops.

Recipe is here - docs.google.com/document/d/1...

Marks of the Enemy, aka People Who Can't Be Trusted.

Anyone that refers to themselves in the third person.

White guys with dreads.

Anyone that likes creamed corn.

Putting something orange into a seafood/clam chowder.

Saying reorientated.

Cod: A Biography of the Fish that Changed the World
I have wanted to read this since it was published and I'm glad to have finally finished it!
Great book, engagingly written and I loved the recipes.

Just a small chain of Oslo stitches but I'm beginning to figure this out. #nalbinding
August 30, 2026 at 10:52 PM
It's essentially a locked sinnet knot. I have tied a few variations of that knot in my lifetime so I already know I can tie this knot, I just need to practice it a bit more. #nalbinding

So far my #nalbinding experience isn't going well.

I know I can get this and I will but I currently have a pile of permanently knotted yarn next to me that will never be usable again....heh

Nalbinding invented before knitting or crocheting using a single needle to create durable products like hats, mittens, and socks.
It's a series of knots, and unlike something that has been knitted it will not unwind if you pull on a loose end.
I will attempt making a hat using the Oslo stitch.

#Google and #GoogleMaps showing themselves for the fucking cowards they are.

It's called Lake Ontario no matter what the orange felon says.

This film is in my personal Top Ten Comedies of all Time.
Young Frankenstein is one of those horror comedies that set the bar very high.

Gene Wilder and Mel Brooks created a film that will still be remembered for generations to come.

I picked up a Calabash style pipe at an Estate Sale! It needs some reconditioning and a new meerschaum pipe bowl insert but its awesome!

"..... their national monuments, their hydronyms.
Canadians also know that naming reality means calling it Lake Ontario – then, now and always."

Does anyone want to take a bet on how long it will take for someone to explain what hydronyms means and why it's funny to the Manchurian Cantaloupe?

Lake America.

Could you imagine the kind of window licker you would need to be to be a Trump supporter.

She was a light in a world that was too often dark. She tried to leave this world better than she found it.

For me there is no higher tribute that can be offered and no higher purpose to live by.

The world is slightly dimmer at the passing of this light.

A friend of mine is a Biologist at the Experimental Farm here in Freddy Beach. They're currently studying potatoes! He shared some of their recent harvest with me, red and purple potatoes!

My wife is on here, @reluctantart.bsky.social, she never checks-in here so I'm making a super secret post about her.

I love her so much. She is my best friend. I love that she is the first person I see every day and the last person I see every night.

I would marry her across a million lifetimes.

Over the last while I have been trying to move outside my comfort zone and do things I was always told were dangerous.
I have approached many white vans looking for candy.

One of those lessons is, you should actually watch a fucking YouTube video at the very least first, before you do stuff like this.
Sadly, that is a lesson I have failed to learn every time.
Lessons were learned.
