Nalbinding? What's that?
"needle binding"?
...an older form of yarn structuring like crochet and knitting? oh neat! ...I shouldn't.

Knitting? ❌
Needlebinding? 👀🤔😣😒🙄😐😏🤪😦😰

My nalbinding Halloween creations have inadvertently demonstrated all three nalbinding stitches I know: Broden (pumpkin), Oslo (ghost) and Mammen (hat). I guess it's time I learn a new one.

my library is going to stock the #Nalbinding book! Happy :) It might have guidance in so I can do this craft without pissing off my shoulder. #fiberart

Nalbinding?

Go to nalbinding.net/get-started and try it out! You probably already have everything you need: a yarn needle, scrap yarn, and a thumb. Invest in the nicer tools if you decide to stick with the craft.

My needles came in and i tried nalbinding lastnight! My thumb pad of my palm ached from holding everything too tight, but I'm hoping confidence will allow me to pull back on my hand tension

Oh, I know (my mom has gushed over people from around the world sharing their different regional heritage patterns/techniques that were previously unknown).

But I'm more likely to pick up nalbinding if I do fiber arts. Crochet and knitting are both too modern for my Viking-era reenactment stuff.

The lining is conservation work, added by the museum. Sometimes it is made to be removeable, sometimes it is sewn in, so any knowledge remaining on the purlside is lost until next round of conservation.
Having a slit at the top of the cuff adds fit, nalbinding stretches less than knitting.

Current side project for when I don't feel like drawing: nalbinding socks!

This is thumb-tensed Finnish stitch 2+2 with tornedalian lovikka yarn, the warmest combo there is.

Nalbinding is pretty dope

I think this is a logical approach if you have to make all the yarn yourself from scratch, and when doing a craft like nalbinding where you have to keep splicing in yarn as you go.

I've been wanting to try this since forever. Specifically, I want to try nalbinding, and I want to try the continuous splicing method that @sallypointer.bsky.social suggests may have been used in the earliest forms of textile making:

I think this video explains the concept better. Basically I want to extract the fibers, then twist them into yarn as I work up the nalbinding project. Instead of starting with the yarn all made like you would typically do in modern day fiber arts.

I almost apologise in advance to all those who started following me b/c of that nalbinding post. This is very much NOT a crafts account and if you haven't already made the mistake of scrolling through my post history you're about to have a very rude awakening
October 9, 2026 at 8:16 PM
Oh, I have HUGE trouble with knitting b/c any mistakes become so visible and/or will wreck all your hard work down the line 😅 nalbinding doesn't unravel on its own so you can just drop it whenever and it stays the same. Missing a loop here and there doesn't matter either.

In English, the technique is called nalbinding, as English alphabet doesn't include the letter "å".

I had a lovely weekend at Conspiracy, a convention not for playing games but for writing them.

I ran an impromptu workshop on writing horror scenarios, a planned one on self publishing, and learned how to make books.

I had to leave early though, as on Sunday I was running a nalbinding workshop.

That's a big problem trying to sell to people who are often makers themselves. Either it's something people can make themselves, or in order to charge a reasonable amount for time/effort would put the price out of reach of the 99%.

I mostly trade these days e.g. I don't nalbind but my friend does:

More pop-up photos: I bring swatches every time. This way, you know exactly how your yarn will look & feel when made into a finished piece, no matter what craft. All our swatch rings have samples made with knitting, crochet, nalbinding, and weaving, as well as sample lengths of the yarn itself.

More pop-up photos: We don't just sell yarn, we have 3D printed tools that I design and manufacture in-house as well. The nalbinding Loopships are very popular, and the SpinCue is designed to hold your spinning fiber's end securely and mark where to start drafting from.
