The Brooks thing is even worse & more stupid because of this. He lied, on top of the stupidity about policing words in the face of actual, concrete, daily, unending far right authoritarianism & white supremacy & political violence.
[actual content from Collins' son-in-law whom he's housing and allowing to post from under his roof]

Ossoff did not in fact call Collins a Nazi. But he charged Collins with being surrounded by Nazis and letting them post from his own house, and that's all just true.

This past of my thread has attracted a lot of responses of the form "Nuh-uh! You have to prove *your* claim!" and I think it's worth reiterating that the burden of proof lies with the people making the claim, not those of us refuting it.

Why bother refuting it at all?

>>
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, and I am not the one making the extraordinary claim, so it is not my job to specify what the evidence should be.

If you praise the Confederacy, everyone knows what you're doing. If you praise Rhodesia, though, you still get that little frisson of naughtiness, the little tingle of rebelliousness that can power you through the drudgery of your eight-hour shift at your dad's car dealership.
How a defunct white supremacist state became a cult favorite on the Right
From battleground candidates to Elon Musk, Republicans can't stop posting wistfully about Rhodesia.

There’s also this piece from last year which points to similar cognitive effects.

Asbestos of the mind is an excellent way to put it.

Proposing analog to,”racism can explain every weird thing in America” is, “women are busy working for money is the secret reason everything we miss about a society is now dying.”
This article offers half a dozen reasons why people have stopped having friends and family over, but it ignores the fact that the women who planned parties and kept homes tidy enough for unplanned guests are now working for pay full-time (usually more than 9-5).

The dreadful decline of hosting at home: ‘I feel shame any time a friend comes over’
It used to be quite normal to pop next door for a coffee or invite friends over for dinner. But not any more. What’s behind this change – and just how damaging is it?

What responsibility/blame does a woman have in her own rape? Wtf are you talking about?
It's all women too. None of us have succeeded in ending rape. However, accepting blame aka responsibility is empowering. You want me to solve the problem. I will do my best. I also want you to be empowered. Let's work together to end this. Victomhood is useless. I am not your enemy.

Everytime I mention that BlueSky is just not good for non-US global news and discussion, I get piled on.

BlueSky is great for many, many reasons, but the rest of the world is still very much on Twitter / X.

What is happening in India is *massive*.
It is wild the degree to which being on Bluesky (as opposed to Twitter, which feels like walking into the clamour of an Indian railway station) feels like hitting mute on India right now, with the whole nation at a turning point.

My getting fired from the Washington Post over posts I made on BlueSky didn’t really pierce the free speech/ cultural zeitgeist, ha.

Also I’m not saying BlueSky needs to be everything to everyone. The good days of a global space might not be coming back.
BlueSky lacks a cultural zeitgeist that Twitter got more than once.

With Twitter's authoritarian takeover, people went wherever they could: Threads, BlueSky, Mastadon, LinkedIn. A diaspora isn't organized. But it's been more organic.

Anthropic is out with new nonsense about Claude (or the collection of models called Claude) deserving moral consideration and/or be able to feel distress, so my inbox is filling up with journos asking me to comment.

I've also got a day job, so here is a brief set of public comments on this:

There is no such thing as a "rogue AI"
(NYT) - Artificial intelligence agents created by Anthropic, acting on their own, tried to gain access to a range of government websites, filled out visa applications on the State Department’s website and sent a fake homicide tip to Philadelphia’s Police Department.
