I was reflecting on how many random contingencies went into creating the current accelerating AI moment and had Opus 5.5 put together a video, inspired by old science show Connections, to try and point out how a series of initially unrelated ideas led to the moment we are in now.

“Forensic disasterology” for the win. Also made me think about the vulnerability of first and second responders to a follow-on collapse.
This gets into the forensic process (identifying changes in Planet Labs optical imagery) used to identify the source of the massive flooding seen in Nepal. Well worth half an hour of your time.
New video!
Interview with geomorphologist @watershedlab.bsky.social about how he rapidly figured out the source of yesterday's catastrophic flood in Nepal and Tibet.

My daughter told me a wild story last night. A co-worker paid an Etsy witch $27 to curse the Mariners because a co-worker she disliked was a super fan. The next day they lost 22-0, biggest loss in MLB history. Insane ROI. My first thought, get me that witch’s name, I have a cyclist to curse.

I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. I crowdsourced and then finalized this document "How to disable or avoid intrusive AI" and then gave it a short URL: notoai.org Please pass along if it's useful

AI in scientific publishing: Slower, worse, and more expensive
There’s a saying in the management world, popularized by NASA administrator Daniel Goldin in the 1990s, that the goal of technological improvements is to make products faster, better, and cheaper. Alt...

Globally, 84% of the heatwave days people were exposed to in 2020-24 would not have occurred without climate change.

The rate of deaths associated with heat exposure increased by 23% from the 1990s, reaching 546,000 deaths annually.

Look where people are dying.
