This is it: we need to talk about the insane commodification, the pre-automation, of children (and parents) that AI was designed for.

citation-checking, I see that Baron-Cohen's UK title, 'Zero Degrees of Empathy', was translated into US English as 'The Science of Evil' !
Simon Baron-Cohen is definitely redeeming himself. But not sure we should forget that he did define autism as a lack of cognitive empathy - an “extreme male brain” - for a generation, based largely on a short lab test involving two dolls hiding marbles.

After the death of Jason Arday, Will Self asks what happens when the media machine mistakes what interests the public for the public interest.

Don’t outsource the analysis of data to AI! Simply outsource it to your large, privately financed lab. I’ve been able to attract people prepared to work all hours and learn any skill, purely on the promise of a career path that we’re further pushing toward extinction. #automations

Now imagine:
“My graduate student did almost all the writing. I remain the expert and the thought leader behind the piece.”

“My postdoc did almost all the writing… “ 🤯
Dean of Science at Stellenbosch University writes that although AI generates almost all the words for his articles (including this one):

"AI did almost all of the writing. I remain the expert and the thought leader behind the piece."

When AI writes the words, who is the author?
After an AI detector classified one of my opinion pieces as entirely AI-generated, I found myself questioning where authorship ends, where expertise begins and what readers deserve to know.

I realise this wasn’t clear. I’m not saying that people confuse their objectives. I’m saying: when you seriously work toward one vision, you can’t help support the other too.
There are 2 main visions of sociology’s purpose:

1. To offer a critique capitalism as a culture; and

2. To provide a systematic, empirical analysis of society as it is.

The problem is, in practice, these missions are too often one and the same.

The university is a killing field. It is fully culpable. It must be said. Regardless of his deception. The neoliberal university made that happen. We don’t have to excuse his behavior to see how unevenly distributed resources and fucked star systems makes the university a killing machine.

No, that is not the alternative

The alternative was treating like a normal news story, and not a trial by media - one that was so clearly turbocharged by Arday’s ethnic and social background and the growing resentment in the establishment in the UK of having more black people in high places
The alternative to this is people lying with impunity, with the media knowingly covering it up. It's an awful story. And the media will get a lot of the blame. But those who perpetuated the lies and shielded Arday from facing up to them deserve more of it.
I don’t think there’s ever been a clearer example of the British media bullying someone, who was so clearly vulnerable, to death so shamelessly in my lifetime for engagement and clicks

And now we’ll have to watch the people that did it claim they’re shocked, and horrified

Perhaps the worst thing is knowing that, when Arday died, The Spectator and friends in right media in UK will have been popping the champagne celebrating their clicks being up so much during their unrelenting daily “coverage” of this story.

The story does not need more oxygen, but one bit of historical context: when I was an undergrad at Cambridge in the 2000s, there were many *more people with the surname White* than there were Black people.
