ftr @inthemoment19.bsky.social chose the prompt, the angst is on her 🤪

Exactly this. And in fact, many models *have* been created this way, and decades of prior machine learning systems *were* created this way, consensually. These things are choices! People are STILL working this way! It’s not just that a better world is possible — it already EXISTS. We can nurture it.
This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

I can’t emphasize this enough — “AI” wasn’t born corrupt and toxic. For ~75 years, it was mathematicians and scientists doing interesting, thoughtful work and trying to solve problems, making only the usual human mistakes. What “AI” did to machine learning is as tragic as what it did to artists.

Thread.
This should be so obvious that it doesn’t need to be said, but given what kind of weekend it’s been on here, apparently it does:

If you don’t want old rapists running the world, in office, in the board room, making decisions for all of us

get comfortable with “ruining” young rapists’ lives

we fucking loved it, even when there was basically nothing on it, and let me tell you something else: we loved it because of human connection, human diversity, human creativity. WE DON'T NEED A SINGLE THING ANY OF THESE COMEMIERDAS HAVE MADE AND TRIED TO SELL US IN ORDER TO HAVE A GREAT INTERNET.
i especially love all the dopes saying “when the internet first went mainstream everyone hated it too” like it happened in the pioneer days so no one can dispute it, like mf’ers we were THERE

Tu Youyou discovered a substance used to treat malaria. She tested the new drug on herself to speed up the time needed for development. That drug has now saved the lives of millions.

Later today, we will announce the 2026 medicine prize. Who will be the next to change the course of medical history?

all the mailers i get wailing that "the billionaires WILL LEAVE" if the tax passes... GOOD. pay up or get out, you privileged parasites.
If you have $100 million to spend on ads saying you shouldn’t be taxed you’re not being taxed enough

The people saying "book bans are good for book sales" and that "AI is here to stay, just accept it" are basically saying the same thing: that you should be quiet about harmful things and accept the status quo.

Which is why you should scream and keep screaming against harmful systems.

not that the anti-vaxxers listen to reason or peer-reviewed studies, but for the rest of us 😎
WELL NOW, would you look at that?

A massive, 4-YEAR-LONG study of NEARLY 30 MILLION people in France found that individuals who received a COVID-19 mRNA vaccine had a 74% LOWER risk of death from severe COVID-19 compared to unvaccinated individuals and ZERO increased risk of all-cause mortality.

Have you noticed, lately, or noticed people around you commenting, that there just seems to be no money anymore. There's no money for companies to make the tv shows you like, the video games you like, the local diner you like shut down, no one you know can find a job.

Think about that in context of
AI is now the biggest investment in all of US history as a percentage of GDP.

Datacenter construction is up, all other construction is down.

"AI Is Squeezing Out the Rest of the Stock Market," reported WSJ 2 days ago.

We basically bet the whole economy on the most optimistic visions panning out.
Part of why I don't like the AI-or-bust economy is the constant flopsweat of people on the news who say this HAS to work. Quit making everyone so anxious. Goddamn. If this is the next Google then why are you acting like this? I don't remember being told to buy an iPhone at gunpoint.
