Jaded KCMO urbanist. Marketing agency owner. Curious person. Creative generalist. Traveler. Visited 49/50 largest US metros.
I will never understand the army of commenters in every post about new housing in the urban core simultaneously complaining about "too many apartments" and that rents are too high. 🤯

The rebuild of a short section of I-70 through east (Paseo to Van Brunt) KCMO has a $237 million budget.

We are blind to the insane extend we subsidize driving (and sprawl as a result).

But hey, they're adding #OneMoreLane (eastbound only), that should fix it.

"You pay every time you board a bus, and that makes you think about whether you want to ride it. If you paid every time you used a parking space, you'd also think about whether you want to drive. Free parking doesn’t mean free markets; it often means freeloading."

Not a fan of the adulty archetypes of my youth now being old and dying people.

Remember, he was a princi-PAL, not a princi-PULL.
Dennis Haskins, the actor best known for his role as Principal Richard Belding in the sitcom “Saved by the Bell,” has died. He was 75.

His character played both a nemesis and a mentor to the show’s protagonist, Zack Morris.

The idea that this was going to be an entertainment district set in an old industrial area with repurposed buildings was what made it exciting and truly evocative of the history of the site. Now it's just gonna be more empty land.

Man, even when I agree with the reasons, internet pile-ons are just gross and disproportionate. I get that people want to feel morally superior, but they sure do it in the most inhumane ways possible.

Maybe if the Longs don't understand what they've done to culture of their club, they can surely understand what they've done to the value of their asset.

Hot take: @kcstreetcar.org is too KC nice, waits too often for passengers not quite at the stop, and dwells way too long to let people meander off the car. Passengers are trained to be slow. Even if you got left at the platform a few times, speeding up dwell times would benefit you and everyone.

The Chancellor has clearly never been to the Canadian suburbs. That's All-American!
*MERZ SAYS CANADA HAS BECOME MORE EUROPEAN THAN EVER BEFORE
The current criteria requires a country to be "European", so that's a non-starter unless you try and claim they're European because of St Pierre et Miquelon or something like that. The other criteria are basically a sinch.

My "radical" act: ride bike in parts of town people breathlessly warn you about and simply greet every person you encounter. Some will just glare at you, but most will light up.

Wave at families on porches. Get beat by kids in a bike race. Signal touchdown for a game of street football. Smile.

The intense irony when people advocate for heaps of free parking and fight bike lanes in an appeal to the everyperson.

Another way cars ruin cities: they drain them of wealth.

Amazing that well-resourced parents will attend to every detail to give their kid the slightest advantage, but will point to "personal responsibility" and "moral character" to explain the struggles of those who didn't have the same resources or circumstances growing up.

If you're breathlessly worried about street parking, you might want to do something about these selfish folks who turn 4 spots into 2.

Here's another great chapter in @kclibrary.bsky.social's Making a Great City Series. Going deep on fundamentals urbanists understand: great cities are engines of prosperity, and making them great takes intention and effort.

Selfishly, the worst part of the way the @kansascitycurrent.bsky.social has conducted itself is that it has completely robbed me of the joy of attending matches.

I just kinda wanna stay away from those vibes right now. And if it had gone down before season ticket renewal...

One of the most insidious examples of late stage capitalism is the sharing of Amazon Wishlists to support charity.

Yes, let us hold together our society by funneling money to the placeless retailer whose business model requires taking over our public streets.

We'll spend $300M to deck over a block of freeway because the noise is so bad. And it is!

But the noise is bad everywhere. We're not courageous enough to enforce noise ordinances and outlaw exhaust mods? Everyone would benefit.

Serious question for businesses that whine to the media anytime our totally standard, best practice parking policy is actually enforced: why are you located in the most walkable neighborhoods in the city if parking is so important to you? There are endless options in our metro for unlimited parking.

How Kansas City undermines multifamily at every level, making the most economically productive housing typology less amenitized and more expensive:

Despite being a residential building, our address doesn't count as residential and does not qualify for the city's dumpster program.

Overheard a girl asking her dad if they could leave the neighborhood on "the back streets" and he responded "you pretty much have to get on the highway."

Not true, obviously, but what a sad reminder of how most people think about and experience their cities.

The question we should ask when "reimagining" highways like US71 for a generation or more: in this time of accelerating technological and climate change, are we really going to be moving around in private autos in 50 years? Let's make smart, durable investments.
