@markusoff.bsky.social does excellent reporting, tracing a point we make briefly in passing as part of our latest research. Separatists organizers and activists mobilize due to COVID, and now are trying to expand the movement and get Albertans who are alienated to join their cause. 🧵

We've probably learned more about American politics from the ANES than any other single data source. The same is true for the GSS and sociology. Both of these are gone if Congress acquiesces to these NSF cuts.
NEW: In March the White House released an FY27 budget request that zeroed out the National Science Foundation's directorate of Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences (SBE). For months it was unclear what would happen. Now, with FY26 over, the damage to SBE is coming to light.

My reporting:

I think this story is less about any failure of the Carney government's "buy Canadian" policy and more about the interesting questions raised by any attempt to reorient government procurement away from the United States.
PM Mark Carney pledged to ‘Buy Canadian.’ Since then, $7.8 billion in contracts went to American corporations
A Star analysis reveals U.S. firms dominated federal contracts despite PM Mark Carney’s ‘Buy Canadian’ promise.

ICYMI: @carrietait.bsky.social & team again confirm separatist organizers met with U.S. officials.

Yet they distance themselves from Trump himself.

Why? Trump isn’t popular in Alberta, Albertans know that, and connecting Trump to the separatist movement reduces intentions to vote for separatism. ⤵️

54% say Alberta is on the wrong track.
48% say the same about Canada.

Albertans are actually more positive about the direction of Canada than their own province.

Alberta is heading into a high-stakes referendum on Oct. 19 in a rapidly changing information environment. With more people getting their news from political influencers and AI search results, our latest report examines how the conversation is unfolding online. 🧵
