The cat is officially out of the bag. I promised a consequential first, here it is!

On (or around) October 6th, for the first time in its 20+ year history, the SPC Mesoanalysis will be available to the field in real time via NCEP NOMADS.

Oh, and it’s in NetCDF, not GRIB.
Love being on a NWS training session about hodographs only for someone to spend 5 minutes bashing a passion project you spent years on for the benefit of the community

After a long hiatus, my photography page has returned!

It’s updated with new entries, retains randomized layout on refresh, & also adds lightbox functionality & direct links to the photos.

Oh, and you can order prints directly from me now. They make great gifts 😁.

This is exactly why we are working to get more of our data/guidance available! We cannot wait to see what you do with it!
SPC POST RRFS looking nice.

I am unreasonably happy seeing this. This is exactly why we wanted to make the Mesoanalysis available!

Wow, this team is an absolute joke. Tarmac Mateer, Arbuckle, and Bill Bedenbaugh all at once.

Kelton has a lot of good thoughts, and I'll add my own.

A lot of problems (though absolutely not all the problems) that people have with generative AI are actually problems that people have with

1) Greedy capitalists
2) People who don't give a shit.

(There's some overlap there, for sure.)
I’ve been trying to formulate opinions about this for a while. I still don’t know how to communicate what I am experiencing, thinking, & feeling. Lot’s of nuance.

The truth is LLM coding tools are too efficient & effective to be ignored anymore. Yes they’re flawed, but so is human intelligence.

The final implementation has been pushed back to October 14, but you can find preview data at the link here. ↓
New offerings from SPC. You can check them out on NOMADS. Including, for the first time, our mesoanalysis grids (in netcdf format). We also use our mesoanalysis code to post-process the entire RRFS domain for every forecast hour and every initialization. nomads.ncep.noaa.gov/pub/data/ncc...

Christmas has arrived early!

The HRRR-based SPC Mesoanalysis, and RRFS North America Domain forecasts postprocessed by the mesoanalysis routines, are on NOMADS!

It’s in its parallel evaluation until early October. Then it’ll be operational.

One thing I miss about the early internet is whimsy. Everything has become sterile & boring with corporatization.

I also miss screensavers... as a kid I used to scour the internet for cool screensavers.

This little addition of whimsy to my home page is an homage to those things :)

Achievement Unlocked: Issue a Convective Outlook (Update) 🏆

I’ve done plenty of thunder lines for the outlooks, but this is the first time I’ve worked on the main outlook and written the discussion! Pretty cool moment.

This is a big one. NWS seeks comment on the removal of NWS text product warnings in favor of CAP-only. My hot take is that the decision is already made.

Tim has put in an immense amount of effort and time into getting this ready for the transition to RRFS/REFS, coordinating with all of us and undertaking a huge task! Exciting stuff coming from SPC and excited about what we’ve all been working on.
Big REFS Transition Project 1 (spc-post v3.0) is done. spc-post is SPC's suite of guidance and model post processing. It runs on WCOSS2, the NWS supercomputer that also runs the US forecast model suite. Today, I froze the spc-post v3.0 code in preparation for the 30-day test period. 🧵
