The REBYC-III CLME+ and EAF4SG Projects are regional initiatives working to advance sustainable fisheries and marine resource management across the Caribbean.

@fao.org led, @thegef.bsky.social funded and the University of the West Indies, Faculty of Food and Agriculture executed, REBYC-III CLME+ and EAF4SG are working across the Caribbean and North Brazil Shelf Large Marine Ecosystems to support more sustainable, responsible and resilient fisheries.
A fishing technology can look promising on paper and still fail in practice.

That is why new gear needs to be tested under real fishing conditions, considering catch, bycatch, safety, cost, handling and whether it actually works for fishers.

Sustainable fisheries need more than good science.

They also need good governance, reliable data, meaningful participation, workable regulations and institutions capable of turning knowledge into action.

Conservation and commercial interests do not always have to pull in opposite directions.

If a gear change can reduce mortality while maintaining catch and improving the condition of landed fish, there may be benefits on both sides.

What exactly is a pinger?

It is a small acoustic device attached to fishing gear that emits sound underwater. One potential use is helping reduce interactions between marine mammals and fishing nets.

Good fisheries management combines science and technical information with fisher knowledge, local realities, meaningful participation and the legal and institutional support needed for lasting change.

Bycatch cannot be addressed through technology alone. Practical solutions also require information, incentives, technical support, effective policy and the participation of fishers and the wider industry.

EAF brings three priorities into the same conversation: ecological wellbeing, human wellbeing and the ability to achieve through effective governance and institutions.

Reducing bycatch helps reduce avoidable fishing mortality and safeguards the resilience of the marine ecosystems that fisheries depend on.

Fish stocks do not exist in isolation. They depend on healthy mangroves, seagrass beds, reefs, estuaries and seabeds. They are shaped by climate change, pollution, fishing practices and market pressures.
August 5, 2026 at 11:04 PM
Bycatch can include non-target fish, juveniles, marine turtles, marine mammals, sharks and rays. Even animals released alive may be injured or experience delayed mortality.

The Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries looks beyond target catch. It considers the health of marine ecosystems, the wellbeing of fishing communities and the systems needed to manage fisheries over time. #EAF #marinelife

Not everything caught during fishing is meant to be caught. The unintended capture of other marine animals is known as bycatch, and it can affect far more than the catch brought to shore. #Bycatch

Fisheries are never only about fish. They are also about habitats, livelihoods, food security, governance and the communities whose futures are tied to the sea. #EAF #SustainableFisheries

Coral reefs are the most diverse habitats on the planet—hence their nickname, the "rainforests of the sea." They’re found in less than 1 percent of the ocean, but they’re home to nearly one-quarter of all ocean species.

Ghost gear pollution, or Abandoned, Lost or Otherwise Discarded Fishing Gear (ALDFG), continues to catch long after it leaves a fisher’s hands, adding strain to Caribbean fish stocks, vulnerable marine species and the habitats they depend on, while creating hazards for fishers navigating the water.
Ghost gear, fisheries waste and the push for better solutions — The Sustainable Fisheries Projects
Fishing gear is designed to catch, but when it is lost, abandoned or discarded, it can continue harming marine life, damaging habitats and creating risks for fisheries and navigation. This blog explor...
