I really believe that any history of journalism that doesn’t consider that so many mainstream and now “legacy” organizations worked to undermine or moderate the already vibrant discourse of black media on issues like freedom and democracy is obscuring a huge part of the national story

The first black-owned newspaper, Freedom’s Journal, was published in early 1827 by Samuel Cornish and John Russwurm who, like many early Black journalists, really should be considered among the originators of contemporary U.S. media and muckracking.

I learned this week that the New York Times was founded 175 years ago. There is a useful set of pieces floating around on this for journalism history buffs. But what struck me is that means the Times was founded 25 years *after* the black press which will celebrate its 200th birthday in a few months
