Historian of Texas, the Southwest, and modern America. Books: Blood Oranges (2016), and You Will Never be One of Us (2022). Currently working on a history of the Texas farmworkers movement. Opinions my own.
It was a huge honor to be able to include this volume in the “New Directions in Tejano History” series, which I co-edit for @oupress.bsky.social. Out now!

Excellent reporting on Larry Itliong’s son, Johnny Itliong, and his quest to pull his father’s legacy out from Cesar Chavez’s shadow. Much of this mirrors my interest in Antonio Orendain, the United Farm Workers and Texas Farm Workers Union in South Texas. (1/2) 🗃️

After the Cesar Chavez Scandal, Can Johnny Itliong Restore His Father’s Activist Legacy?
Johnny Itliong says Cesar Chavez stole credit from his father, the farmworker activist Larry Itliong. For years, he has been trying to correct the record.

Great thread here:
This Day in Labor History: June 18, 1954. The CIA overthrew the democratically elected president of Guatemala, Jacobo Arbenz, to defend the interests of United Fruit. The American Federation of Labor happily helped! Let's talk about this horrible incident of American labor's imperialism!

My online Texas history students are once again blown away by the history that @refusing2forget.bsky.social highlights. If you’re unaware of the horrific violence and ethnic cleansing that Mexicans faced in South Texas from 1848 through WWI, please have a look at RTF and their important work. 🗃️

My current pleasure read is Ron Chernow’s excellent recent biography of Mark Twain, and I’ll never not be amazed that this little silent film of him (with his daughters Jean and Clara) still exists. Shot by none other than Thomas Edison, too.
